There's some misinformation in this thread.

First off, the pick up in Tony Levins bass is not an aftermarket pickup. It's a musicman with alnico magnets that's where the "they don't make 'em" comment of his comes from.
He prefered that sound over the ceramic pickup. Lucky for Tony that they're now building them with alnico again.

Anyone can get a round, smooth sound out of a musicman bass if you know how to work with the bass.

And the "clacky/clanky/clicky" sound that some people are complaining about. Well, that's the sound of the strings hitting the frets. How about playing in manner so the strings DON'T hit the frets??? That's what I do unless I play Iron Maiden songs.

The Stingray (and other EBMMs) has a very raw, "aggressive" high end, that's true. But you can tame it by cutting the treble, but mostly by touch to tell the truth.

Of course you can get a crappy tone out of a musicman. If you dime everything and play it really hard. But I'm sure I could make any bass sound bad, even a Sadowsky!

I like them, but not enough to actually get one. When I needed some cash I often thought of getting an MM and pocketing the difference from the sale of my Fender CS Jazz... But I could not go through with it, the sound is great, really fun to play but it's not a long term bass for me.

A lot of people have complaints about the ray that stem from their own poor technique... There are very few legitimate complaints in this thread.

I love my stingray 5. Not a fan of the stingray 4s... I do like the sterlings, but for now when it comes to 4 string I go jazz...

And I'm curious to how many of these opinions were formed from playing a bass in GC that wasn't setup and didn't have fresh strings on. I hated all stingrays until I went to bass central and played one that was properly setup.

i DISPISE warwick, but i think a good musicman is okay. not worth ever buying if you ask me, i'd prefer a fender jazz over that anyday.

but overall im not crazy about musicman.

Only thing I don't like is that most have unlaquered necks/fingerboards, which means that necks/fingerboards get dirty and have to be cleaned with steel wool (or something) from time to time to keep the necks and fingerboards from looking and being dirty. Other than that, they are the bomb. I think there are a few limited edition 20th anniversary MM basses which have laquered necks/fingerboards, but try finding one of those for reasonable cost...

I have a bunch of basses and no particular brand love/bias.

That being said my SR4 lined fretless gets the lions share of my playing time. That one just has a soul like nothing else I have ever owned or played. Nice low action, well worn strings, a fast sorta grooved out fretboard, good active electronics that aren't too hot, stays in tune well, and gives me a nice wide variety of usable sounds. I even have a D-tuner on it that works perfectly. It's my go-to gal.

One thing I will say is that I've picked up brand new Sterlings at the stores and have NOT been impressed at all by them. Way too hot, weak D & G strings, dead spots, bad action, and they seem to sound pretty different. I don't know if they just need to age like wine or if manufacturing quality is falling off - but they ARE a different animal it seems.

However, I was in a pickup band for a gig once and a guy loaned me a Stingray. I gotta say, it played fine and sounded good, but it didn't feel like "home."

I'm not a big MM fan. I really wanted to like the SR5 when I was buying my main bass but I couldn't get used to the string spacing and I didn't really like the tone that much.

Having said that I've quite liked the Sterlings I've played.
