Anyone on TB know any famous musicians?

I think this thread would have been more on target with a title of "know anyone who plays for someone famous" or something along those lines. I've got three. An old buddy of mine plays guitar for Vertical Horizon. I've got a bass player buddy who plays for Tate Stevens, and one of my closest friends is drumming for Kelly Clarkson and fills in for Big & Rich when they need him.

Here's my favorite brush with fame story. 2001 I attended Victor Wooten's bass camp. I live in NC and the camp was in TN so I just drove (beautiful drive). I forgot about the hour difference in time and I usually arrive early when I travel anyway. So I got there a good two hours + early.

Fast forward about a half hour.......

There I was literally holding Victor's youngest child (Adam IIRC) while playing ping pong (outside no less) at about 10:00 a.m. with both of Jaco's sons and Steve Bailey. Adam Nitty was sitting directly beside me on the front porch of the main building of the complex. Victor and his wife were sitting at a table only a few feet away waiting for new arrivals. So, it was pretty much some of the most well-known bassists on the planet (and the Pastorious who played drums as well) all hanging around outside a cabin in the woods somewhere west of Nashville. And we were just chillin and chattn as if we had all known each other for years. This was NOT a strange dream. At the time it was a bit surreal though.

After about an hour or so of that when others started arriving I had to walk off in the woods and call my brother. I almost pissed myself. Of course, they all turned out to be really nice guys who would probably laugh their butts off at the though of anyone being that freaked out about hanging out with them.

To add to that, Steve and Victor had just bought some of Stanley Clark's basses and I got to actually hold both the red Alembic bass and the brown one...... yes, THE red bass and THE brown bass. For the first couple of days it was a little bit overwhelming.

*sigh* I jammed with Chad Kroeger of Nickelback about a year before they formed Nickelback. My wife's best friend at the time was dating Ryan Vikedal (their first drummer, who they scammed and forced out the band early on) and so we hung out and jammed quite a few times. Chad was actually cool (I know, I know) and Ryan is to this day one of the nicest guys I've ever met - at least before they became huge, never spoke to him again. :) Ryan is still the best drummer I've ever played with - a jazz master, and one of the top drummers I've ever seen live.

The highlight of my life is actually doing a day-long theory and composition masterclass with Oscar Peterson. We all jammed with him for most of the day and he casually would direct and chat with us like a normal conversation, all the while playing the crazy complicated piano. He was a really cool dude and I'm so incredibly honoured to have shared that experience.

All that said, I hate name dropping too, but the OP asked, so...

I answered the phone one night at my parents house, about 15 years ago, wanted to talk to dad and had a thick accent... I asked who was calling and he said Rudy Sarzo! I was all like ***!

Dad had purchased a bass or two from him via ebay. Just too freakin cool....


I've met some other guys over the years, when we've done sound for them or they stumbled into the music store I worked at in college, but we're not chatty, call the house, friends or anything like that...

I grew up knowing Tony Creasman. I went to school with his kids and my father built their latest house. He comes over and listens to my band when he has the chance. Hes a world class drummer and a great guy

When I first started playing bass i was visiting my aunt in new york. My cousin called me up and asked if i wanted to jam with him and his friend. It was a great time. I later found out that his friend is the drummer for Eric Sardinas. Very down to earth guy and very fun dude to jam with!

I grew up with, and was a teenage friend of, Derek Kerswill (former drummer of Unearth, Seemless, Kingdom Of Sorrow). The dude even has his own character in one of those Guitar Hero type games. At that time he was a big fan of The Beastie Boys and Anthrax (this was like 1987-ish). And he had a flat top haircut. We both flipped burgers at Whalom Park in Central Mass for a couple years. Great kid, lots of fun to be around.

Not quite as famous, but my cousin Chris was the bass player for The Yelling for a couple years. I think he played on the track that was featured in one of the Transformers movies.

I go to a music gymnasium (highschool) here in Sweden, where the math/drum teacher is Peter Wildoer, the drummer in the swedish deathmetal (?) band darkane. I do know him on a personal level and he is one of the best guys i have ever met, a beast on the drums and really genuine and down to earth guy! Now he is not a SUPER famous drummer, but definately on the top 50 list of best metal drummers. They have sold many albums and have toured regularly throughout the years. I'm happy to have the chance to spend time with him on a daily basis :)

Nice! I'm eagerly awaiting their new album. Also, I'm a teacher here in the US, and that gives me hope!
