Anyone still using the Barber Linden EQ?

I'll confess: The language in the manual with regard to the Contour and Input 3-way toggle switches was a little bit of spooky magic speak to me. Input wasn't too murky, but Contour, I wasn't sure if I knew what I was hearing and why. Then I spotted the 'tube vid of David Barber giving a rundown of a series of pedals, with the Linden Compact last in line. And suddenly the clouds parted!

It's partly because I'm guilty of having not been alive when the original amps were being made. Him talking about bassists plugging into the Bright input on the 'peg and then cranking the Bass knob to get a big yet tight sound, though... so many things make sense now.


I think the day I posted my last response up above on 6/3/20, I ordered the pedal direct (one of the last to be stocked, we'd soon find out). Its leftmost toggle settings were immediately clear, but I found myself reluctant to experiment because of my lack of understanding, even though I'd thought I'd had a good idea what it did then.

It's like buying it all over again, but without spending any money. This is great lol

1. Does the toggle that tightens up the bass response employ a HPF to do the job? Would this make my always-on HPF redundant or is something else going on?
2. Anyone using this directly into an effects return on their amp? Does it have enough output to work this way?

Thanks - just bought one from the classifieds and I’m already thinking about how it might integrate best with my amp (p bass through an Ampeg rb-210 w/ a portaflex 2x10 ext cab).

I can't tell you 100% if it is using a HPF because it doesn't really act like it is, but it does tighten it up and sounds REALLY good. That's how I have mine set. And as for the FX loop - it depends on how loud you need to be. I was running mine into the FX return of a Hartke HD508 and it could get reasonably loud. Worked well for practice and acoustic work, but I'm not sure how well it could handle to full band situation.

Yes. Well, that's what I do anyways. Hopefully others will chime in soon cause I have a feeling it depends on factors such as wattage, speaker configurations, etc.

I use an Arkham Oracle into Linden into Mesa WD800 for no reason other than it gives me versatility and joy.

Good catch.

Still using the Linden (both v1 and v2)….both are permanent fixtures on my boards. Perhaps the most useful, powerful and effective pedal I’ve ever found. David Barber really knocked it out of the park with this one.

Absolutely.

Amazed at how musically versatile the pedal is.

Dang near sounds like a Neve strip.

Warms up my tone, oozes into the sonic spaces in a track and has just the right amount of break up to it.

Hope all this translates live.

Bunch of work starting next week. Have high hopes.

Kat bass... into the mosky xp booster... into the Linden... directly plugged into my audient interface. I love this sound... Are these other expensive pre amps that much better?

It depends on what you're searching for. I have a bunch of preamps and dig them all. My faves and always used are the Linden. More expensive would be the Arkham Oracle and the JFA Capo. But I'll always love and use the Linden also. It's a great sounding pre.

I have a Tech 21 Q\Strip. It also is a Baxandal EQ, with the addition of two semi-parametric mid controls. Would it be redundant to have a Linden?

I have both. The Q Strip is more surgical, and the Linden Barber is more vibe. Yeah, that don't make no technical sense but it's the only way I can explain it. Linden always on, Q used when needed. If I had to lose one, it would be the Q, but both are good.

Sorry to perform necromancy on such an old thread, but I'm trying to find good demos of this pedal. The only ones I found on YouTube are ancient and not particularly comprehensive or well done.

Can anyone point me to some more recent or higher quality recordings A/Bing with and without the pedal?

I went in blind and have no regret. I turned a couple friends onto this pedal and they purchased based off of my advice. None of them hate me and they all still use this pedal. I had a conversation with the builder of this as I've been at the Linden factory a few times with my father who was friends with Jess Oliver and it was great to have that short conversation but that really means nuthin. It's a very cool pedal and that's all. I don't have recordings of it as it is used live. But it's very valuable to me and I would never get rid of it. I hope my ramble helps in any way, enjoy!

I have similar experience I bought it without hearing sound samples and it’s just awesome. Super versatile and makes everything sound better.

Same here. I bought without demos, just because of great reviews here on Talkbass. Great sounding pedal.
