Anyone use the SFX Ultra Tone?

Any news on this?

I am most interested.

:D

Matt.

I completed the pedal for Cybersnyder.

Unfortunately, I wasn't entirely happy with the result :( so I decided to through away the PCBs :crying:. I reviewed the circuit and ordered a new PCB. Cybersnyder was informed about it and hopefully in a couple of weeks the new pedal will be ready. :bassist:

FWIW, he mentioned to me recently that he was swamped with custom requests right now, so it may take him some time to get to all of them. :)

I am starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel :)

Any update?

The Ultra Tone arrived today. Well built, low noise. I guess the obvious comparison is with the Submarine. To my ear the Submarine has more warmth and the tone control is more pleasant in either extreme treble or bass setting. With the Ultra Tone the treble boost adds zing, but I couldn't tell much difference between it and boosting the treble with my OBP-1. Engaging the scoop and boosting treble puts you in definite slap tone. But it was similar to rolling up the treble/bass boost with my OBP-1. Rolling down on the tone to the bass extreme seemed to have more of a blanket over speaker effect rather than dubby goodness.

Definitely not a bad pedal, but I think the Submarine suits me better. The Ultra Tone would be nice for adding an active sound to a passive instrument. With the exchange rate as it is, for $170 for the Ultra Tone and $109 for a Submarine, I think I'll stick with the Submarine. Honestly, even reverse the prices and I would choose the Submarine. I play mostly fingerstyle, maybe someone that does a lot of slap would choose the opposite.

All personal opinion, YMMV.

what results, opinions re: B^3 please
Quick Review: Solid, useful pedal.

The scoop switch is, as described elsewhere, pleasingly 'musical'. Exactly what frequencies it's scooping I don't know but it can help tame an overly aggressive sound.

The Bass end of the of the ultratone control does exactly what I expected from the frequency charts ... it rolls off the treble somewhat like a passive tone control and I think boosts the bass a little to compensate. I don't use the treble end of the range of this control, it always stays below 12:00.

The gain control is at unity gain at about 9:00 which means for me that it stays pretty much at 9:00 ... not sure why all the extra available gain is necessary.

One thing I've noticed in my home rehearsal environment (active bass -> B3 -> VT Bass -> PODxt -> headphones) is an increase in noise, typically when the ultratone control is near 12:00 or higher. I haven't traced it down, it's quite possible that the B3 is amplifying something already in the signal from the bass, or something else, rather than it being the B3 itself. That increase in noise is not at all noticeable in a live environment.

The live signal chain is typically active bass -> B3 -> VT Bass -> Markbass CMD112. VT Bass stays on all the time, most of the tone variation is done on the active bass, and the B3 is my 'deep' switch.

Hope that helps.
