Anyone Using Only Micros Now?

I have never owned an all tube amp, but I did start with a Peavy Combo 300 (1x15") that weighed about 100 lbs with one top handle. It was a great sounding amp, but a pain to move.

Now, I have no amp head that weighs over 7 lbs and my 1x12's are about 32 lbs each and I couldn't be happier. I have the best sound I have ever had and the load-in is as painless as can be without sacrificing anything.

Which 1x12's are you using?

i'm running a GK MB800 exclusively now. The heaviest thing is my GK neo 410, which is on wheels, so its pretty easy to cart it around, even if i have to lift it up some stairs, i dont mind doing it. Especially since most of the time im only carting my head around, to rehearsals that already have a cabinet waiting for me.

I went from using an SWR 750X head, Goliath III cab and Son Of Bertha cab to using a Markbass Tube 800 head, 104HR cab for bigger gigs and New York 121 cab for smaller gigs and practice. All I'll ever need.

We might be living parallel lives...I also had a 750x, Goliath (Jr.) III and SoB. Now down to just the 2x10 and am shopping to overhaul my whole rig!

Well, I've done one bona fide, legitimate response, so at this time I would like to point out a common grammatical error in the thread title. It should read, "Anyone Using Only Micros Now?" (This is assuming, since it's a title, it doesn't need to be a complete sentence.) The way it's written, the meaning questions whether the reader is just using the micro rather than storing it, looking at it, cursing it or some other action. In the correct case, the "only" refers directly to the micro, which is what you want.

started with a Traynor SB200H (1.5 lbs) into a rented 210 (can't remember name)....lucked into a Eden D115 cab soon after.....usually take the head to BL's studio and play it into an old Yorkville Bloc 150 15" combo (cable disconnects the cab and amp portion)....it kicks serious butt.....2 summers later lucked into the Orange TB500 you seen to the left.... .both amps sound amazing through either cab..
...rented a Traynor 115 Neo cab for a small outdoor gig....Orange had tons o' loud.

First head was a Hartke 3500 with the tube / SS hybrid front end. Sounded good, heavy as sin. Eventually wanted more old school tone & went with a 'peg SVT III pro. Loved it at first but fell 'out of love' with that very quickly

I ended up going with a GK MB800. More power than I'll ever need. Far easier to get great tone than the 'peg. Oh so light & small.

Whats not to like?

Sold the peg. Kept the Hartke as a backup. Had the Hartke repaired (blew a cap). In the downtime I picked up a used MB250.

Hartke is dead again.

I dont think I'll bother fixing it again. Its a boat anchor.

I came close to going for a Markbass micro setup, but aside from private transactions/expensive shipping, there is no other way get that kind of gear here.

I originally had a Micromark 801, but quickly discovered it wasn't as powerful as I needed and buying a complete micro stack would be very expensive. That 1x8 sounded pretty dang good for my acoustic duo, though.

Which 1x12's are you using?

Bergantino AE112's with a MarkBass Little Mark II. I know that the LMII was popular when they first came out and people moved on to the next best thing, but I have yet to hear a head I like better. Granted, I haven't tried tons of heads, but it gets the job done and I have few complaints about it.

I've been through a number of them - Markbass, Kustom (regret getting rid of it), Carvin, and now I have 2 Aguilar SL112 cabs, a Tone Hammer 500, and an Ampeg PF500. The Aguilar amp is old school, mid forward, and burly, but the Ampeg is the bass sound I hear in my head. I feel like I have to work harder to get a tone I'm happy with and that cuts through with the Aguilar. I'm not sure if I'll keep both heads because I have a bulletproof Peavey Nitrobass for backup. Based on some of the reliability issues with the Ampeg PF500 I've read about online I'm considerin selling both heads and buying an Ampeg PF800. I'll never part with my Aguilar cabs however.

GK mb800 works like a charm. I'm still using some rather heavy 410 cabs but they have casters.
Same here. The only heavier head I would have considered was the Mesa M9 Carbine;, but the GK's weight, tone, and price just rule.

Lately a lot of folks have been raving about the Mesa D-800 Subway. The preamp section looks similar to the M9, but I don't know that it's actually the same circuit. I may have to check one out. But I'm in no hurry; the GK is an amazing amp.

With so many great lightweight amp solutions available, I don't see going back to heavier amps under any circumstances.

I'm close to being there.

I came home from a long rehearsal last week and had to make the trek from the parking garage to my apartment.

I was beat and had my to carry my bass, GK MBF800, pedalboard, and work computer back with me. The walk itself isn't too bad and takes, maybe, 5 minutes with the elevator ride, but, after practicing for nearly 4 hours, I was ready to pass out.

When I stepped into my living room I saw my gig rig, and I told myself how I happy I was that I didn't have to carry my 50lb head to practice with me. It was at that moment that I also realized that I never wanted to have to carry it again.

It's an amazing head, and it's superior to my GK is many ways, but, man, schlepping that thing is a task in itself. As such, I've decided to only play micros from here on out.

Anyone else have a similar story? Anyone still fighting the good fight with their heavy heads?

I know that you aren't doing a scientific survey but this thing is going to be way out of whack in favor of micro (I am) as non-micro users are probably unlikely to click! Many of those guys, well, they might be called "hard heads" by some. I'd call them hard bodies, of course.

I suspect if your thread was titled "who's still using only heavy equipment" you'd get the opposite out of whack results.
