Really? You must have been attending a different Y2K than the rest of us. I don't remember anything about it 'almost killing us'. I remember a lot of stupid hype, but again I was rooting for some action...and nothing.

the article i read suggested that he really did work out the kinks in his old calculations. the numbers seemed well multiplied to me.

may 21 is the second anniversary of my wife leaving me. i guess it is a date of acknowledging the destruction of all that i knew and the start of my blessed life....

News announcement on 5/21. The Japanese nuclear reactor drama was way worse than reported. Our food supplies and water have all been dosed with high levels of radiation.

if i understand correctly, the first generation of christians expected the apocalypse within their lifetime.

(there is also some debate as to whether the "end of the world" literally meant the end of the planet or the end of the oppressive world that they lived in, i.e. the roman empire's fall, but that is another topic).

as time moved on and the apocalypse did not occur, the predictions just kept moving forward. in other words, there is no more need for explanations now than there has been for the last 2,000 years. in a way, predicting an apocalypse that does not occur is traditional.

The Mayan calender predicts nothing, the end of the calender is the end of that cycle of their lifetime, and was supposed to be continued by the next generation. The civilization died off and never continued it.

Besides, it can't happen May 21st either, my birthday is a few days after that and I want my presents!!!.....LMAO:p

It all depends on what your beliefs are.
There are corruptible fanatics in every religion, Christianity is certainly not spared of them.
A small percentage if the church will twist the scripture to say anything in order to compliment their agenda, which is the case here.
Most churches will read scripture the way it is supposed to be studied, yielding a "cut and dry" understanding of the fundamentals of not only the end of the world/apocalypse/second coming, but of the rest of the book. Making it more of a "waiting game" and surrendering control of the future, rather than trying to predict something which through unbiased study of The Book, proves unpredictable.
I don't know of any thieves that would openly make their plans for arrival known.
