Are any of you interested in a eq tutorial ?

If you guys are getting notifications constantly, you can ignore them till Monday. I have to work all weekend and am doing mix sessions in the evenings. Monday evening I'll be back with the tut. Likely around 8pm central time. I'm out till then. Have a good weekend.

In this case text would likely be better. There are charts and images that need to be inserted.

Hey good to see you still...my bad, I thought you were busy from noon today (Eastern) until Monday and you won't have time to post any video or charts or images (that need to be inserted) until then.

I must admit, I am impressed with your time management skills, though. You're working all weekend, and your evenings are filled with mix sessions, and yet you still have been able to keep up with and respond to posts on this thread all day. I mean, I have the day off so I can just check in whenever the mood hits, but you seem able to stay on top of responses to this thread and all the while working and doing your mix sessions.

It would probably be just as valuable for you to post a tutorial about time management/multi tasking as much as your original idea. Being able to do THAT is a much more valuable skill than anything with EQ.

I'm being completely serious here....how is it you are able to work all weekend, and still have the time to post on this thread as often as you do....I mean once you are actually "out" (not noon eastern after all I guess?). I would pay good money to learn how to be able to do THAT....forget anything with EQ, tone, or music in general.

Theres no secret to that. Its called being the boss and being able to point at what I want done. We did almost 1000 ft of tile today which means while yall were entertaining me I made about 5 grand.

I get you...in fact I feel the same way. OP made that classic mistake of setting a meeting about the meeting. For some that is the right way to build buy in but for many it comes across as annoying...kinda like "hey you, can I ask you a question" me..."you just did, next time save us the trouble and start with the main question"

The only thing we can control is how we respond to "hey can I ask you a question" and in my experience snarkiness and negativity makes it worse, but in an ideal world the question "can i ask you a question" will just go away. Deep breath and just answer "yes. Ask away"

Eager to see what happens on Monday,y expectations are pretty low at this point but I'm vested enough to see where this goes. I will definitely.have popcorn ready though when I check on Monday cause no matter what, OP is gonna take a beating.

Sometimes, maybe tenacity isn't such a good thing...

Last time I posted something similar on a car audio board. I caught the same hell. That was so many years ago I dont even remember and to this day I still get messages off that board with people thanking me for the info. Those people make all the bs so worth it.
Same thing could happen here, too. Keep your chin up.

To be honest, I only had mild initial interest, but since all these naysayers keep putting words in your mouth/pre-guessing what you have to say/telling you that it's a bunch of crap, before the big reveal...oh I've got popcorn now.

Again, pretty impressive. I mean, getting $5/sq ft for tile (by itself pretty impressive) but also able to keep checking and posting on this thread...good time management skills. Please teach me about this, seriously I am not kidding.

Also, how did you keep from getting any thinset on your phone or tablet while working? Or were you just the contractor and you had guys doing the install for you? So that means you're charging what...like $7-$8/sq ft so you can clear $5? I can do tile...where are you located where tile guys are pulling down this kinda coin? I would totally relocate for that kinda bread. Help a brother out, forget about the EQ stuff.

If I were going to post info that's already available in any of the 10 thousand videos already online I wouldn't waste my breath, or yalls time...

I don't even know why I respond.

And yet, here you are.

Also, I think it would be helpful to determine the audience of the video. Professionals have professional reference materials\gear\knowledgeable friends, so it would of little value to them. However a guy like me would appreciate any MacGyver approach to EQ I could be informed of. I don’t want to waste my money or justify some piece of gear to my wife if I don’t have to, or risk getting something for church that’s only useful in a club, etc...

Just go back to my post on I think page 3 or 4. I just shared info freely, because you having access to it is not going to get you high paying sound gigs like I get, because I also have years of experience to go along with it. The OP is probably worried if he can't get all his thoughts into a youtube video to go viral and get some ad revenue, he won't get anything out of it. I don't care about any of that stuff though. The other thing you can add to what I said is to google "frequency eq chart" or "frequencies of instruments chart" or something along those lines, and you will find tons of images with the entire frequency spectrum laid out, with either the ranges of various instruments, or subjective descriptions (boomy, tinny, warm, etc...), or both, which will help you figure out where you might want to cut or boost.

Like I said before, you probably want to go brighter than you think, for intelligibility out in the crowd. You probably don't want to add much if anything in the low mids. Then whatever your sound is doing in the room, you just tweak that to whatever degree necessary. I'm pretty sure this guy is just going to come back with a 50 paragraph post that essentially says "if your bass is boomy, turn down the bass and/or low mids" and "if it's getting lost, turn up the upper mids and highs". And that's what Captain Obvious is probably wasting everybody's time with. If he truly had some amazing breakthrough, he would have been too excited not to share it by now.

So the "MacGyver" approach to good bass tone is really goddamn simple.

Fresh strings
Proper setup (basically, find the balance between "don't make yourself work any harder than you have to" and "too easy and everything is a buzzy mess"
Flat eq on the amp to start (and on the bass, if active)
Mild low mid cut as a starting point
Mild upper mid cut
Good amp with decent headroom set moderately clean
More than enough cab for the gig (1-2x the wattage output of your head is a safe bet)
Mild compression (high threshold, low ratio, medium attack, and medium slow release)
Keep your cab out away from the walls if at all possible (3-5 feet or so is a good start)

If you do all that, your tone should work for just about any genre of music and any room. Then if you need something different, start with small adjustments, and always cut what you don't want rather than boosting what you want.

Then functionally, if you need to adjust something, if you have a regular TMB tone stack, just raise and lower each knob in turn until you find the closest one and adjust as necessary. If you can't quite get what you want with that, start combining adjacent knobs (either in conjunction or contrast with each other). If you have a parametric (with a Q/width control) or a semi parametric (just cut/boost and frequency), you can set a band at a time to full cut (you could do full boost but you just have to be more careful of your speakers), and then sweep the frequency, until you find the one you're looking for.

That's really about it for EQ technique. If you want to get into theory, we could talk about masking, and all that kind of stuff, but it's sort of already included in the 2 shallow mid cuts I mentioned. Those make room for guitar/keys/drums/vocals/whatever, while allowing the bass a presence in the mix, but without being overbearing. Sometimes a more mid oriented tone might be apprpriate (ie the Jaco tone), but you'll just have to be smart enough to know when that makes sense. Likewise with a darker tone with most of the mids and highs rolled off. Just don't go too far with that.

I kinda doubt the OP has anything earth shattering to add after that. The main thing left is just learning the different frequencies both by ear and by number so when you need an adjustment, you can get to it quickly.

I mean, I typed that whole big post in probably 15 minutes, and that's an entire comprehensive approach to bass tone and EQ. You're "one simple trick, you wont believe what happens next!" should surely take less time than that?

Who cares about that? I wanna know where I can get $7-$8/sq ft to install tile. I'll move.
