So, you use EQ to adjust tone. Which means, adjusring tone and using EQ is the same thing. It's not two different things.
Semantics. Corrective eq and shaping the sound to your taste are 2 very different things. I'm talking about how to readily identify and correct issues first. You guys have made this huge deal out of nothing. I simply wanted to help people that dont know how, correct for the space they are in so when they move locations their sound doesnt fall apart on them. A way to lay a solid foundation based on the surroundings.

Well, as long as you insist there's a difference, some of us belive you don't know what you're talking about. If you use eq, you change the tone. If you have changed your mind, good.

You might actually learn something, you may not. If people had an open mind and pick up on this it goes a long way when you have to eq yourself to the venue and you are counting on your gear and not a PA or foh to make you sound good.
 
You guys can make twenty pages by Monday if you try hard enough.

You guys are just latching on to any little thing to try to argue. Yes eq is part of tone. I don't even know why I respond. This post was never meant for anyone with experience. It was for people who find themselves shooting in the dark when it comes to adjusting their eq. A way to not randomly twist knobs hoping for results and approach things more how foh would but with some tips for guidance using knowns so that the guess work is removed upfront.
 
The "tone" is the sum of the frequencies coming out of your speaker or the PA. EQ is used to change those frequencies. It's the same thing. If you want to "correct the room", get a sledgehammer.

So if EQ really does change tone, can you EQ a Ric to sound like a Hofner? Why do so many people end up getting a P bass with flats if they could just take any old bass and run it through EQ to magically change the “tone” to sound like a P bass with flats?

Tone=/=EQ
 
"EQ" refers to the response/adjustment of particular frequencies. It's an objective quality of a particular sound.
"Tone" refers to the way our brain interprets the sound that enters our ears. It's subjective, even if parts of it can be measured objectively, and is as much a product of the listener as it is the player or signal chain.

Yes, changing the EQ will have an audible effect on the tone, but saying "EQ is the same as tone" is ignoring everything else that goes into creating a tone. You may need to EQ your signal in radically different ways each night to achieve the same tone, depending on the room you're in. Then there's things like clipping and compression, which impact tone but can't be accurately described as simple EQ changes.

TL;DR: Tone is the end result of a process, EQ is just one step in that process.

This gives no meaning. Timbre is the result of the frequencies that comes out of a speaker system. EQ is adjusting those frequencies (depending on the instrument, the amp, the DI, the room, the mix etc.). There is no difference. Sound /is/ frequencies. (Or more precise: sound is soundwaves, measured in frequencies. That's what gives the tone or timbre or whatever you like to call it).
I assert that the meaning is clear and valuable.

Sound is frequency in conjunction with amplitude and waveform and phase. Frequency identifies the note and the octave, i.e. the pitch. Amplitude is the loud-to-soft continuum. Waveform determines the distinct sound of an instrument. Frequency, amplitude and waveform are independent of one another. You can change any of the three without affecting the other two.

Timbre is what distinguishes the sound of a clarinet from a trumpet from a piano from a harmonica, et al. In engineering terms it’s called waveform or wave shape. If all those instruments play the same note in the same octave it’s timbre that distinguishes one from another. A string under tension when plucked at its center yields (mostly) a simple sine wave. A reed vibrating gives a much more complex wave that is still at the same frequency (pitch or note). Sine, sawtooth, ramp and square waves all sound different even when their frequencies and/or amplitudes are identical.

Equalization is adjusting the amplitudes of chosen portions of the audio spectrum. It’s most often used to correct boominess by reducing the amplitude of boomy notes and to correct dead spots by increasing amplitude of weak notes in a space where those notes are absorbed or attenuated. The function of EQ is to balance amplitude of sound through the spectrum in a way that the human ear perceives emphasis where it’s wanted and evenness when that’s what’s wanted. The use of equalization unavoidably affects the tone of a system, with “tone” defined as adjustment of amplitudes of portions of the sound spectrum of a system (“system” implying bass, pedals, rack effects, amp, FOH). e.g. More treble simply means more amplitude among the higher frequencies or less mid means reducing amplitude among then middle frequencies.

I’d certainly benefit from a situational EQ tutorial. I didn’t know how an HPF worked until this week and I’ve been playing 20 years.

Also, I think it would be helpful to determine the audience of the video. Professionals have professional reference materials\gear\knowledgeable friends, so it would of little value to them. However a guy like me would appreciate any MacGyver approach to EQ I could be informed of. I don’t want to waste my money or justify some piece of gear to my wife if I don’t have to, or risk getting something for church that’s only useful in a club, etc...

I'm not going anywhere. I have information that I feel will genuinely help a lot of people. Information I've gathered over 2 decades of tuning rooms, cars and studios. Im not going to let some trolls attacking me for the lulz stop me from getting this info out to people who want it.
Last time I posted something similar on a car audio board. I caught the same hell. That was so many years ago I dont even remember and to this day I still get messages off that board with people thanking me for the info. Those people make all the bs so worth it.

Tone=/=EQ
You think foh gives 2 crsps about your tone? No they want a balance sound corrected for the room THEN they may consider your tone request. If your tone has a 12 db spike in one room and a -12 db null in another is it still your tone? That's the kind of thing I'm going to show you guys how to fix so that when you do start to dial in your sound, it stays solid.
