Are Bassists becoming antisocial ?

The only people who want to see the bass as a solo instrument are other bass players.
I'm just saying, seems like a lot of "look what I can do !". It's the same thing that destroyed guitar playing in the 80's.
It's the song that matters. The clincher was when I saw some guy slaping to an AC/DC tune. ***

Its the march of technology. Once upon a time a boy joined a band and got a 4 bar solo when the band was introduced. And then there was that one in a million, the Ron Carter's or Stanley Clarke's who after proving himself with those four bars was encouraged to do more. Today they don't have to wait their turn nor pay dues. Just plug in and copy what someone else has done and say "look how great a job I did coping Jaco"

What is up with all the bass solo videos on the web.
I started playing bass to be in a band not to wank off on stage by myself.
Tap this, slap that, blah, blah, blah.
It's starting to get to me :(

What is up with all the uncontrollable computers going straight to Youtube's selection of bass soloists?

I bought a computer to surf various sites, not to have it pull up bass solos on Youtube without my direction.

Click this, load that, blah, blah, blah.
It's starting to get to me :hmm:

I watch bass videos to improve my playing in the context of a band. Learning to play with my 3 right fingers or slap better will do nothing for me.
When's the last time you heard slaping on the radio ( and I dont mean classic RnB stations).
It's like jocks have taken over. Bass aint a sport.

Still doesn't make much sense. What's causing your computer to continuously seek out videos that you don't want to see?

Perhaps not, but learning to type (with three, four or more fingers- right or left, keyboard doesn't care) into the search engine for the sort of instructional vids you want to watch might.

This afternoon. What's wrong with classic (or modern) R&B? Or Gospel? Or Funk (which can include slapping)?

Did a jock slap your bass? This might just be a matter of honor- challenge said jock to a duel.

IMHO this is GOOD THING for us other guys like you and me who love the groove. I'd rather them stay that way so the rest of us are even more valuable to bands. :D

I too am not a fan of the slappity, tappity, solo stuff, but sometimes those techniques can be excellent songwriting tools. Especially slow groovy tapping...

I agree on the radio thing. Slapping is near extinct right now unless you happen to hear some mudvayne or RHCP. Which is a good thing. I remember when I had a year long Victor Wooten slapping phase... I couldn't keep a gig to save my life. :D

Most cats eventually learn that less is more and groove is king.

Hmm.... Interesting.

Have you tried not watching bass solo videos?

Big +1
Just go ahead and buy DVD's or go completely outside of how you have been learning and you may be pleasantly surprised...

The bass is more capable as a solo instrument than slap and pop. It seems you've already closed yourself off from those possibilities though.
