Are Squier guitars underrated?

I will have to agree with you on that. It's pretty amazing what kind of a $200 bass they put out. Mine looks and plays great. Very pleased.
How come you think that “Squier guitars get more hate than they deserve"? I never read anything negative about them here.
My own experience: had a Squier PJ. Agathis body. Awful material. Lightweight -- neckdive! Useless to screw in anything. Too weak -- like Cheddar cheese. Sold the body. Kept the neck which is really good. Have it on my Frankenbass. Beware of Agathis!

I believe that the Squier's WHEN THEY FIRST CAME OUT were really underrated. But I also think that the newer ones are not quite in that league. Still, pretty good for the money.
The AK 47 is world renowned because it's a simple design that can be manufactured almost anywhere, and will work in the field under almost any conditions.
Leo Fender designed things with very similar principles - P's and J's represent what was relatively easy and cheap to do in the 1950's in the USA. It's now many decades later, and what you could do in the USA back then, you can do most anywhere now.
A Squier is his design, made somewhere else, with some small, but not all that significant changes. It's simple, and it works.

i have a Squire VM Jaguar Special bass that I play much more often than my 70's Fender Jazz bass.. I'm currently looking for a P bass, and it will probably be a Squire VM, too.
I played a 1984 Squier JV jazz bass for some decades. Yes, the build quality was very good, neck awesome, but the sound was mediocre/lifeless. After swapping PUs for SD Antiquity II's, it comes alive. Maybe nowadays the stock PUs are better.
