Are there any NEW StingRay heros?

I was thinking about the StingRay bass and how good they sound.

Then it dawned on me, I can't remember the last time I've seen one out in the wild. You?
I work at GC and I can't remember the last time we've sold one either. They get a lot of love here on TB. But as we all know, this place exists in an alternate bass universe all its own.

Also, most of the guys who are known to play them are from the old days. Flea, Tony Levin, Tom Commerford, Louis Johnson, to name a few. Hell, Flea has even jumped ship to Fender.

So... Who has come along in the last 5 years that plays a StingRay, I'm sure I'm missing something but I just don't see them?

I liked to think I was one for awhile, but then I went to Modulus and then to Fender. I dunno, but it seems common for people to start with one and then go elsewhere.

That's what I've noticed. It's a great sound, but it's limited. And I personally don't like the HH. They just sound ...."off"

I've seen a lot more sterlings than stingrays lately.

The bassist for Florida rock band New Found Glory is sponsored by EB, he's playing two Cutlasses on this current tour, but he recently showed off a custom pink old smoothie he had made.

The bassist for Aussie-pop punk band Tonight uses one too.

Mike from pop punk band MxPx has used Stingrays his whole career, they're still making music.

As far as very mainstream pop/rock, I can't think of any off the top of my head.

I was thinking there's not enough ray albums out there recently and it's such a great tone. Maybe part of the reason why I decided to record my band's entire album using my 2 band ray (older USA MM SUB to be more precise). It's an alt pop/rock thing where I get quite a bit of tonal variety (growly, smooth, pick, fingers, slap, effects etc). I did switch the pup out for an Aguilar AG 4M (closer to the pre eb tone IMO) but the first band single was recorded with a stock pup. The original 2 band eq preamp is still there, it aint no ray tone without it. I use it for my RHCP tribute as well.

also, Tim Commerford has gone back to StingRays and recently had a bunch of new ones built.

Joe Dart (Vulfpeck) technically only OWNS one bass and it's a Fender Jazz, but he's said a few times that he's used StingRays on several of VF's recordings. So, sure I'll call that dude a SR hero.

Brian rules. I have played through his Ashdown rig a few times. He used a Sadowksy J for a while and years and years ago when we first met, he was rocking that Sadowsky and was GASing over a Warwick I had.

Funny to read this topic because I have been gigging with a Stingray classic and really loving it. A lot of musicians come up to me and ask about it, since not so many are out in the wild like they used to be. In a Funk/jazz situation it kills and in the studio whenever a tune needs a more uptempo and tight staccato sound, it just works perfectly.

Yep. Love his playing, one of my favorites. I know he used a Sadowksy J when playing live, but I believe he has used a Stingray in the studio for awhile. Underrated player (IMO)
