Somewhat, but compare the results to the results of the Marshall Plan.Somehow, I think it was a bit more complicated than that. Just like the multiple cans of worms opened by this thread.

Generalizations: the hallmark of a weak argument
It's only in the West that we're turning into a bunch of wimps.
The Chinese are mostly still fighting tooth and nail for everything they have, which is why they'll probably take over the world at some point.
One of the quotes from the video is "Um..... there's..... like...... a lack of like human respect that goes with this."
So, what about the lack of human respect that not only landed your sorry butt in jail, but the SECOND lack of human respect it must have taken to land yourself in solitary confinement once you got to jail? They should be breaking rocks like they did way back when.
What am I thinking? Give the poor guys a foot rub and some linguine with clam sauce. Maybe Maybe a mani pedi? That'll learn 'em!
Childhood obesity rates have been decreasing in recent years, at least in the US.No, they have raised a generation of spoiled little kids that will grow up to be spoiled adults.
IME you can't generalize (the above of course describes a phenomenon but is a gross simplification and generalization, too), every generation has its slackers and its hard workers.
It does depress me more to see a generation grow up that is overweight and unused to physical activity.

When i was 18 Id crap myself if I had to storm a beach.
He's right on the children thing, the high school students work very hard, but from my anecdotal understanding, a lot of the kids are wusses, and the colleges/universities - unless it's a good one - are generally practically daycares.
So how many of you refuse to eat left overs?
Yes..yes...we have become softer than the softest pudding.
People everywhere are becoming softer, fatter and more dimpled.
Nowadays people dress to LOOK tough.......but underneath they are fragile and flimsy.
The slightest thing upsets them.
And they cry at a moment's notice.
Whenever they are away from their families for more than 10 minutes they have a meltdown.
In the old days they would have been called sissies........but now they're too wimpy to even be known by that name.
We do hear a lot of anecdotes but I'd be surprised if it is anywhere near as bad as made out to be.
My sister has been a college professor for years and she is not at all prone to exaggeration, but the stories that she tells occasionally about her students has me worried about the future of humanity.
There are better ways to treat prisoners than pure punishment and institutional cruelty and constant fear and the threat violence, especially since many are in jail for non violent or economic crimes.
People are not static fixed objects, they adapt and change in relation to the way they are treated and to their experiences.
Many countries spend a lot if money treating prisoners with some dignity, and avoid sentences when possible. The end result is less recidivism, less cost to the state, and less negative repercussions on society.
The death penalty is not a deterrent and it brutalizes the populations in the countries it is allowed in.
Of course there is a small percentage if the population that will not be helped or that will continue to reoffend, but pure repression as a model for all prisoners is horribly ineffective at reducing recidivism, crime, and it damages the health of a society.
Look where it has lead the US, highest rates of incarceration in the world. Are Americans really intrinsically more criminal or is something wrong with the system?
I… I actually have no major disagreements. In fact, I think you may be on to somethingWell actually don't disagree as much as you think. When I mentioned "breaking rocks" I didn't mean that literally. What I want is that we should work prisoners in some way. For one thing we could benefit from them. For another they will feel better about themselves simply by accomplishing somethimg other than working on their hook shot for one hour a day.
But simply giving them three squares a day behind a fence is neither a deterrent nor a benefit to society. A other thing that would help is teaching SKILLS that would apply in the LOCAL economy. Teaching a prisoner in Alabama something that would fill a job opening in Michigan would be silly. Then you offer local businesses HUGE tax incentives to hire these nest skilled workers when they get out.
But sitting around watching cable TV all day would not happen. You WILL produce something and you WILL learn something. Or your experience would become less and less fun. Not violent. But not fun.
We make our military men who screw up in basic training scrub bathroom floors and toilets with toothbrushes. And for prisoners who hurt someone (physically or otherwise) a bad meal is lack of human respect? It doesn't add up.
