Primary and high school teachers here start at around 32k. First year on my job paid about double that. Around here a teacher making what I make, even after many years of service is not very common, other than in the very affluent areas.
Most people I know aren't really making 45k a year or better, but that's really a more recent thing because of the economy.
I started at 12.5 a year. And through work promotions developing a marketable skill set etc I ended up making a lot more.
Keep in mind that a teacher is an entry level job. Roughly equivalent to a receptionist at a corporation, but lower responsibility.
But I didn't get the breathing bonuses and summers off either. I was working, learning and deserving during the summers.
