I don't know what I am, or what is this thread for, or why the poll is tied at this moment. Must be lots of smart-arse right-handers tempering with the results. It's a conspiracy. Gibson won't build lefty basses. Who cares. I got me a bunch of lefty Fenders.

yeah maybe we could expand a poll to include more variations:

· lefty playing lefty
· lefty playing lefty flipped (EADG down to up)
· lefty playing righty
· lefty playing righty flipped (EADG down to up) (who knows...:D)
· dual-core (can play 2 of the mentioned above)
· quad-core (can play the 4 ways
· ambidextrous (can play lefty & righty)

Hey, I didn't know there are lefty can openers! haha I'd never seen one of those! last week I bought a righty scissors (never learned to use lefty scissors) and called my attention there were many models for righty, but the girl attending me told me "I was lucky" they had lefty scissors that day, and most of the time they don't. I told her I use righty and then she said "wow how skilled".
My girl was at my side that time, so I couldn't joke like you are thinking right now :D. Anyway my girl and I we both are lefties using most of the things like righties. It's a cruel righty world we live in, isn't it? -click it, it's an interesting article ;) -

In 1964 the "standard" advice from most people in the biz was: play righty.. A left handed bass was Very rare.. Most guys that started playing lefty usually just turned it upside down. I NOW wish that I had started on a "Real" left handed bass, because as a former child drummer, all percussive hand patterns always started with a left hand lead. This means that my "Dominant" rhythmic hand is on the fingerboard, and not doin' the slappin'... This is just an awkward situation that I'll have to live with till the end of my days.

I'm a lefty but play righty.


Seriously, I think all the right-handed people are retards. I've never understand having your dominant hand as your pick-holding, plucking hand while your "weaker" hand actually does the majority of the work. But then again...right handed people always have been a little wierd ;)

Hey I resemble that remark! No wait...I mean...oh never mind.
Righty playin' righty. Right on!

I remember taking (music) composition class in the early '90s where we wrote music out using caligraphy pens - the ones with the REAL liquid ink in those screw in cartridges - and all us righties used to laugh at all the lefties with their left hand covered in ink. :D Good times, good times!

I've never understood why anyone wouldn't want to fret with their dominant hand, although other instruments kinda make more sense when the dominant hand is partaking in very delicate tasks. I'm extremely glad I went righty since the dexterity of my left hand has always been far superior to my right hand.

Ugg, I hate the smudges!!!!

Although as a pharmacist, I have a couple left-handed pill counting trays!

First of all, I am a lefty playing lefty. Have been since 1964. Best I can tell between 7 to 10% of the population is left handed. I have seen data that shows that Fender builds less than 2% of their basses lefty. I have spoken with several high end boutique builders (you know who they are!!) who also build less than 2% of their basses left handed. Based on the above I expect that 70 to 80% of the lefties playing bass play right handed instruments.

Just to add to your argument, the % of lefties in the arts actually runs higher than national average (using right side of the brain more and stuff.) So they should be making more than 10%.

(although not really, as a lot of lefties are like me and play Righty)

Another lefty playing right handed.
I am left eye, arm, and leg dominant.
So how did I end up playing right handed. Simple, the salesman at the music store convinced my dad that I should learn to play right handed. I think it may have had something to due with the fact they had no left handed guitars. After all it was the 70's. :hmm:

In my book, if your left handed and play right handed your ambi. I'm a lefty and do everything left handed. I couldn't have played righty when I started. I would have quit, thinking it was impossible to play. (I was young). So, if your truely left handed, you would have no choice but to play left handed. The same would go for the rightys. IMHO of course.

Don't agree at all. I'm all Lefty except bass playing. I was forced to learn on a righty because the music store I went to didn't have one, nor could I afford one if I found a left handed bass.

My grandfather was also left handed and was forced to learn how to write right handed in school (the painful way), and so were millions of people over the years.

You can learn to do almost anything regardless of hand dominance. Do I wish I learned to play lefty? Sometimes... but I'm comfortable playing righy now so that also makes me happy.
