The book argues that it is not so much a dominant hand
vs. a non-dominate hand, but rather that the hands
have different functions. The "dominant" hand does small
mostly repetative tasks, while the "non-dominant" hand
solves geometric problems on the fly. Think of a violinist.
Non-dominant hand is solving complex geometry problems.
Dominant hand is doing fine control of the (mostly) respetative
task of bowing.

That's an interesting theory, and may explain a lot...

I play ball righty, but occasionally will bat lefty. When firing a gun, I shoot righty...got hit in the forehead by hot brass when I shot left, never shot left again. I write lefty, but I painted small details on model airplanes (dials on the instrument panel, facial features on the pilots, etc..) righty. So my fine motor skills seem to be righty, but my gross motor skills are more evenly split.

im am left handed :D

but i play righty

i dont really see it as lefty or righty, i see it as just a preference as to which hand does what...its really a two handed instrument...to me its not lefty or righty....more so bothy one way or the other

we should make this poll (if not done before):

lefties playing left handed bass

lefties playing right handed bass


this current poll says that almost half of population is lefty, when statistics and census say 10% of people is left handed.

Maybe most of left handed population choose to play bass, thats cool. hehe

BTW im left handed in everything, but using PC, bass and drums as right handed.

Kind of ambidextrous. Can do most things with either hand, but better at sports, throwing, swinging an ax, etc on the left side. Write and use scissors, can openers, mouse, etc with the right because that's the way the world is designed...

I play right. Started as a string player. Guitars/basses are the only instruments relatively commonly designed the "other way".

Left handed... do everything left handed expcept play bass. (First bass I bought was from a small music shop and they only had right handed so I figured.. "I'll figure it out". As we all know, it's not a problem to be left handed and play righty.. but 7-8 years ago before I touched a bass I wasn't wise to this information. :))

I'm surprised the poll is so close...

I agree Alexei, that would be a better poll for accuracy stats, as I am a total lefty, and play a righty bass flipped. The drums are the same as our drummer laughs as I have to re-arrange his kit to play it, but it never bothered me to be "DIFFERENT" than the masses of righty's out there, or the lefty's playing with the strings in the right position, and for the various types of music I have done for years, if you were'nt watching, you'd never know the difference.
