Extending the heel of the neck into the body allows for a relatively extreme cutaway while maintaining a four bolt neck with a reasonable heel area.

Looks cooler on some finishes than others.

Maybe suitable for smaller hands, but definitely not for my style. They look & sound pretty, though. If they took the SR bodies, increased the spacing & made them 35" scale, I'd buy 2 of them.

Anyway, ftm ppl seem to focus on the high end of Ibby's catalogue, but tbh to me the most impressive stuff is at the other end, with the SR25X confirmed as a steady entry in their line (the cheapest solid SR - I like 'em more than 30Xs - although for the 4 string bangers, this year there's a colour feast, yum) and the surprising GIOs - mahogany? 6ers? Really? Wow ;)

I like that ibanez still works on giving quality stuff for the cheapest price possible - I don't know how the heck they manage to do it, but they seem to be pulling rabbits out of their hat every year :)

I think it is long term thinking. If you can snag the sapling (new) bassist when they can't afford something expensive you probably have a bass fan for life. Once you are used to play an SR bass many others feel like crude tools.

The Japanese are good at long term thinking. Their business sector is allowed to invest. What you describe is probably the result of that and of making great basses.

You're perfectly right :)

The thing with the SR line was the significant specs difference between the lower models and the mid-high instruments (from SR50X up). Somehow they've managed to reduce it by using mahogany for body and a better EQ. I am amazed they did that, but it's a very smart move considering the market is flooded with dirt cheap used Ibbys - they need to attract new buyers, and not only the Ibby addicts (like me) :) Any good builder can make a high quality instrument, but not many can offer it for peanuts. GIOs may not be the Holy Grail, but with every new upgrade they leave their entry lvl tag behind and step into the realm of good cheap solid & reliable workhorses ;)

Some guys in the industry finally understood there's good money to be made from selling "cheapos" - if you can design them interesting enough to tease and stupid cheap so anyone could affor buying them :) There's a real craze going on right now in the synth world with cheap analogues and someone at Ibby must be keeping an eye on things and taking notes :)
