Are you "That Guy"? I'm asking because I'm "That Guy"...

Are you "That Guy"??

  • Yup! Even I don't know where some of my gear came from

  • Nope! I'll look at new gear, if it comes from Fender, Ibanez, or Ampeg

I'm the bass player in town that has all the gear nobody recognizes...and I LOVE it!

I'm always amused when other bass players come up to me and ask me what I'm playing, and then the blank stare after I tell them AND let them check out my gear! Once I got to the point where I could afford the stuff I wanted, I pretty much stopped buying stuff from GC and SA. If it's not Fender, Ibanez, Shecter, or Ampeg, some of these guys and gals have no idea that there are other manufacturers making bass gear. I'm the guy who shows up with Kiesel, Valenti or Dingwall basses, an Arkham Sound or Basswitch preamp, and goes into a Barefaced or LDS cab. I may have some Cog Effects, Iron Ether, or FEA Labs on my board at any given time(My board is a LOT less boutique-y at this moment, but it was CRAZY boutique-y for a while and may be again soon...).

I'm not knocking guys who play Fender, Ampeg, and Boss, there's a reason that stuff is legendary, and it works in every musical situation, but I always get a chuckle from look on peoples faces when they hear "Kiesel Vader basses(soon to be back to Dingwalls)into a dual SansAmp wet/dry setup into Barefaced Big Twin II's. It's like I said everything in Swahili...

So, who here is also "That Guy"? And, who here isn't? I have no problem with either side, in fact, I'd like to hear from both...;)

I bet you don't have an instrument like That 1 Guy:

@bholder -Dude! Even I would be like "What the...:woot:! :D

I suppose if you play those basses through an Ampeg of some kind, that would count as "kind of"...LOL!

Please tell me about the green, graphite, acoustic, fretless...

Oh yeah, that Cataldo is pretty amazerballage...
That turquoise fretless graphite acoustic is the mighty Emerald Balor! The new ABG volume king, as far as I know (plenty of contestants I haven't tried, though.) Sample clips on my soundcloud page link in sig. ;)

I'll take a listen, thanks! Are they still making those?
Oh, yeah, they're relatively new, actually, replaced their old ABG model last year I think. I've only had mine for maybe 5 months now. @StoicStrayCat just got his 2nd - a wild purple fanned fret 7 string! :D
High End Acoustic Bass Thoughts/Recommendations

Edit: also a couple of great ensemble clips from Emerald in this other thread here: High End Acoustic Bass Thoughts/Recommendations
Really shows it standing up just fine to a bunch of loud acoustic guitars and being heard, even with competition from 2 6ers and 2 12s!

@bholder you're my hero :D You got some cool stuff. And if you were closer I'd check out your mighty Balor in a heartbeat.

Me - yeah, get some stares and some comments, showing up with a bright red MAS cab and fretless Zon bass which I play on a stand, plus a Sonic Farms DI into an RAD poweramp.

Those cabs look extremely impressive - I imagine the sound is too!
And that Zon! drool I should trade in a few dozen cheaper weird basses and get a couple of nice ones (well, got some nice ones too, but no Zon yet).

I really dig the Zon TJ's! That's definitely an "If I ever win the lottery" bass.

My semi-high-end Ibanez gets mistaken for a Schecter, which boggles my mind a little :wideyed:

I know, right?! I showed somebody one of the Dingwalls I have on order, he asked "Is that a Dean?" My first thought was to punch him in the back of his head. My second thought was to ask "Have you ever heard of ANYONE ever ordering a Dean?", then I remembered the Dimebag stuff and I'm guessing folks might've had to wait for some of that stuff. I settled on just calmly explaining that the D stood for Dingwall and the story behind the fanned frets. But initially, I just wanted to punch him...

Who doesn't want one of these? Why don't you think they're around? I've had that in my eBay alerts for eons it seems
There's a few for sale now, but the prices are a little dizzying... ...the reissues sometimes pop up at reasonable prices, but the originals run >$1500.
