I'm the bass player in town that has all the gear nobody recognizes...and I LOVE it!
I'm always amused when other bass players come up to me and ask me what I'm playing, and then the blank stare after I tell them AND let them check out my gear! Once I got to the point where I could afford the stuff I wanted, I pretty much stopped buying stuff from GC and SA. If it's not Fender, Ibanez, Shecter, or Ampeg, some of these guys and gals have no idea that there are other manufacturers making bass gear. I'm the guy who shows up with Kiesel, Valenti or Dingwall basses, an Arkham Sound or Basswitch preamp, and goes into a Barefaced or LDS cab. I may have some Cog Effects, Iron Ether, or FEA Labs on my board at any given time(My board is a LOT less boutique-y at this moment, but it was CRAZY boutique-y for a while and may be again soon...).
I'm not knocking guys who play Fender, Ampeg, and Boss, there's a reason that stuff is legendary, and it works in every musical situation, but I always get a chuckle from look on peoples faces when they hear "Kiesel Vader basses(soon to be back to Dingwalls)into a dual SansAmp wet/dry setup into Barefaced Big Twin II's. It's like I said everything in Swahili...
So, who here is also "That Guy"? And, who here isn't? I have no problem with either side, in fact, I'd like to hear from both...
I used to be that guy. Used to attend my regular Blues gigs with Spector's, Alembic's, MM Bongo's and a plethora of uncommon amps but have gone full circle and now am using more vintage amps and a hot rodded Precision.

I can dig that. I've done something similar with my pedalboard, as oxymoronic as that sounds. I used to have a board full of digital, programmable effects that sounded amazing, but were kinda hard to use. My board is almost entirely analog now. Not as extreme as you, but I get where you're going with that...

Honestly the older I get the less I care about the gear. At one time I could tell you whatever little detail you wanted to know about my gear. Now it just doesn't interest me as much. Certainly not comparing myself to Macca, but I've gotten to where strings are just long shiny things.
I prefer Jazz basses, and as long as the gear sounds the way I want and plays the way I want....well, the rest is just window dressing.

My main bass these days is a Hammersmith 5 string. But it a traditional body style so usually doesn't raise too many eyebrows. Anyone who gets close enough to read it asks who they are.
I rock a burgundy Mesa Walkabout Scout 15" stack.... which is the only one in existence as far as I know.
I run an Ashdown LB30 into an Epifani UL410 a lot as well.
Sometimes when I'm going for thay really old school thump I run my Fender PA100 head into tue Epifani. That gets looks for sure. But the moment they hear it they forget any negative comments they were going to make.
I have a parts P bass in sonic blue with a tort guard and Creme DiMarzio pickup. Same thing. It gets a look or two until they hear it.... or play it. Cuz it is slick.
So.... yeah.
But I also have a stock MIJ P bass in CAR and flats and a burst/tort 5 string P bass. So I get get traditional when I meed to.

I usually get questions about some of the pedals I have... mainly the darkglass stuff besides that and my upright my stuff is all Fender, GK, and Ampeg
I'm only a little bit that guy. I play warwick 4-string which barely raises an eyebrow into Genz Benz and a fEARful 15/6. The ff definitely draws some blank stares. I have a pedal board with 7 pedals, some MXR but also some Iron Ether and the Grizzly Bass.
I've been playing Warmoth basses for years. Sometimes people ask what it is. I tell them and they are universally unimpressed. In fact it usually ends the conversation.
I have a few ask me who made my bass.

Just the other day I showed a fellow bassist my Genz cab, he had never heard of it. He's pretty old school, playing through a borrowed Trace Elliot stack at the moment. He seemed to recognize my Yorkville amp though.
