Nope. I’m the guy playing Peavey basses through Carvin amps and blowing the sound guy away with my tone. Don’t much care what’s on the price tag or how boutique a piece of gear is. Tools. Not status symbols.

Yamaha SBV? Or a vintage one?
I had a 60’s Yamaha bass like that. It was unique. I have a Yamaha SGV-800 guitar in that color. It’s the one from around 2005 or so. I also used to have an original 60’s SG5A guitar - sold it regrettably and too cheaply.
I stick with more traditional looking basses... (can’t find the pic of my Roland bass, but those are my related guitars)
I WANT to be "that guy"...but I'm afraid I don't have the funds or will at the moment. But hey, when all my buddies were turning to Fender, I ordered Carvin....when people are looking at the "cheap" amplification fix, I'm more interested in the fEarful cabs, building guitars and cabs.I'm the bass player in town that has all the gear nobody recognizes...and I LOVE it!
I'm always amused when other bass players come up to me and ask me what I'm playing, and then the blank stare after I tell them AND let them check out my gear! Once I got to the point where I could afford the stuff I wanted, I pretty much stopped buying stuff from GC and SA. If it's not Fender, Ibanez, Shecter, or Ampeg, some of these guys and gals have no idea that there are other manufacturers making bass gear. I'm the guy who shows up with Kiesel, Valenti or Dingwall basses, an Arkham Sound or Basswitch preamp, and goes into a Barefaced or LDS cab. I may have some Cog Effects, Iron Ether, or FEA Labs on my board at any given time(My board is a LOT less boutique-y at this moment, but it was CRAZY boutique-y for a while and may be again soon...).
I'm not knocking guys who play Fender, Ampeg, and Boss, there's a reason that stuff is legendary, and it works in every musical situation, but I always get a chuckle from look on peoples faces when they hear "Kiesel Vader basses(soon to be back to Dingwalls)into a dual SansAmp wet/dry setup into Barefaced Big Twin II's. It's like I said everything in Swahili...
So, who here is also "That Guy"? And, who here isn't? I have no problem with either side, in fact, I'd like to hear from both...
I dig where your heads at. If I had any kind of tool using skills, I'd build a fEARful cab myself. I just have no time, and no woodworking skills, LOL!
It really doesn't have anything to do with the money, my man. I like playing unique stuff. Don't care if it costs $500 or $5,000. I get why people always seem to think it's about the money, because unique gear, for the most part, is unique because it can get to be expensive, but the reality is that I think it's pretty cool when I introduce a fellow bassist to a piece of gear that they didn't know about, but could take them to another level or at least inspire them. I'm also the guy that doesn't have a problem gigging a $3k bass, because those are the tools I choose to use.
I don't look down on a guy that chooses to use Peavey and Carvin, I'd hope that just because I use Dingwall and Barefaced, I'd get the same consideration...;-)
You should have punched him, there’s no excuse for mistaking a dingwall for a dean.
My bass is nothing special at all, the pedalboard gets mostly overlooked, bringing 3 rigs might raise some eyebrows - it's the ironing board that always hits a nerve with people.
There's a local guy trying to sell a Dean Razorback with a Confederate flag finish. He wants a crazy amount of money for it as well.
At one time EVERY pawn shop in this town had at least one Dimebag Razorback, and some had one of each (fixed bridge, Floyd Rose)
They are lovely to play, though.

Yes indeed. Need to get it out more. The only thing about it is the pickup is fairly quiet, wish it had more "balls". The "milled in" frets work very well.
@bholder you're my heroYou got some cool stuff. And if you were closer I'd check out your mighty Balor in a heartbeat.
Me - yeah, get some stares and some comments, showing up with a bright red MAS cab and fretless Zon bass which I play on a stand, plus a Sonic Farms DI into an RAD poweramp.

I don't give a single poop whether a brand is known or unknown. Yes, I am kind of a Fender fan but I became a fan for its sound (at least mostly).
I still dig other instruments and amps etc. but ultimately I am looking for the sound. If it ain't got one, I'm not interested.
Since you haven't included a third option in your poll, here is my poll answer.
I even have a weird Jolana bass from ex Chechzoslovakia from 1973, worth probably like 200€. It's timbre, the sound reminds a lot of electric uprights, yet it is a normal electric bass guitar, out of all pup positions I only like the neck and neck surprises me everytime. Deep af, very mellow, yet you can feel the wood of the guitar in it. Perfect for acoustic / semi-acoustic gigs.
Were I to buy a similar bass from a "legendary brand", I would have to spend a fortune to be able to get that kind of sound. Just shop for what sounds good to you, not whether it has an original hardcase, original tuners, original mumbo jumbo if you ask me.
I still dig other instruments and amps etc. but ultimately I am looking for the sound. If it ain't got one, I'm not interested.

I don't strive to be obscure. I'm a "classic gear" kinda dude. That said, I'll buy into any gear if it's awesome. I don't go out of my way to avoid what I've known and loved for many many years though, whether because I've used/owned it, heard it on albums, heard it at a concert.... I don't avoid new ideas that are swamping the market either.
I had a tendency to take it a step further and desire things that not only take time to be made but are very vare, limited, antique etc. Not just bass gear but everything that would be considered a hobby or man toys. I think it’s just human nature to want the hard to obtain stuff. To some (probably including myself) it’s a sickness to some degree.
As far as tone and gear goes I absolutely love it. You tend to get what you pay for and I’d like to think my sound and equipment reflects that. Especially when I’m questioned about it.
Edit: I feel compelled to add that however for the first time in my life I’m actually starting to get away from all this. Waiting months or years for a custom pedal or cabinet that may never even come to fruition is getting old and frustrating to say the least. There’s only so much time in life and lately I find myself not wasting so much of it chasing elusive gear on the net or anywhere else.
