In my corner of the planet,I'm considered "that guy". I don't play anything that unusual but every bassist around here plays Fender/Ibanez/Hartke/GK/Fender Rumble/Peavey& a couple of Gibson/Epi Tbird players.There's a couple of guys with Ricks & a couple of guys with Smiths(they are made not too far away). I raise eyebrows by playing Fender clones (Slick,SX,Hondo ) . My past amp rig was an QSC 850 into a Genz Benz XB 4-10 cab or a Avatar 2-10 with a Joe's Sound 1-15 EV cab.Used a Sansamp or/ & a Zoom MS60B to drive it. Used a Danelectro Longhorn & Haedean Uke bass a bit(& still do).Always got questions from players about that.
Nowadays,I mainly use a Wolf J bass & 2 Phil Jones C4 cabs with a Quilter Bass Block 800.Also a Surf green Sterling Sub(cheap one) with Seymour Duncan MM pickup.I didn't think that stuff was that unusual but I recently played a gig that was a big local musicians hang & every bassist in the room wanted to know what the Hell I was using.Many of them didn't know about the Sterling.The Phil Jones cab & Quilter got a lot of attention.

I have 2 upright basses with the most popular jazz strings on both.

I have a fender precision, a sunburst jazz bass, a black sadowksy 5 and a black sire fretless.

I've been asked about the sadowksy and I always say "I think the lower string sounds better on these basses and i can still get a classic fender tone". Then show them the preamp and they get it.

My strangest bass is the p bass cuz its blue lol

I tried one not too long ago at the Sam Ash in Hollywood, it was *AMAZING"!!! Then I read they don't stay in tune with weather changes, etc which really bummed me out :(

Anyways I'm *sorta* "that guy" as I play older BC Rich basses exclusively, but I use my more conservative shapes like my eagle or shorthorn for gigs where that's more appropriate(from anyone who hasn't tried one the handmade ones are definitely boutique). For metal I play my TJ or one of my Iron bird basses. I also own a fEARful 12/12/6/1 with the Darkglass 900 head but I've yet to gig with that cabinet. So I'm *sorta* that guy(?!)

I'm not exactly that guy, but I'm also not all that far off, either. I play Thunderbirds, including a homemade Fenderbird, through Acoustic Control amplifiers. Not GC Acoustic, the old stuff. One of my Thunderbirds is fretless with Lace Alumitone pickups. That's good for stirring up one weird guy in the audience who can't figure out what he's looking at. There's nothing boutique about anything I have, but it's also not current mainstream.

I play through some pretty obscure stuff, including lots of DIY pieces on the amp side. But for the most part nobody seems to notice or care, which is fine by me.

I'm definitely in the "play what you like, like what you play" camp.
But ... if you show up with your mega-bux, super unique boutique bass and nobody-ever-heard-of-it amplification, and play pretty much the same as the dude who shows up with a used Squire and a Rumble amp (or even worse, they blow you off the stage) ... what's the point exactly ? :unsure:

To me, "That Guy" is the one with the killer chops who knows how to groove like a MF and fits the band and it's music to a T.
The rest is just window dressing.

I totally get that on TB there will be a "gear-head" element, and that's totally cool and I am not immune, but I am always more interested in how well the gear is being used not what the gear is (or how much it cost).

I'm not out to impress anyone, but I have in the past fallen victim to certain stereotypes.........for example, I used to believe that for classic rock gigs (which is mostly what I do) I had to bring a jazz bass. Meanwhile I have these amazing MTD basses that only get played in the bedroom........one day I said screw it and now I play the MTD's on every gig......I'm happier and I haven't lost any work over it.......bottom line do what you like, play what you like......at the end of the day no one who comes out to watch your band really cares anyway........they don't know a Fodera from a banana in my experience.
