Aria & Aria Pro II Club (Part Two)

I wonder how close I could get with a combination of an eq pedal and some sort of low pass filter.......just thinking off the top of my head......

I have often that that this would make a pretty neat substitution in an SB600/700:

It's kind-of-sort-of what the 6-position rotary selector does anyway by progressively rolling off high end while retaining character.

I've been deeply considering buying an SB-1000 or a similar SB and adding the BB circuit, and I've been wondering, can a Series/Parallel switch be installed in an SB-1000? I enjoyed having that option on my R60 and the only problem I see is with the Preamp bypass switch.

From what I know the MB-1 has its coils connected internally so the "batwing" SB-1000s are straight out as you will be unable to access the midpoint between the coils. The MB-1E brought the coil common connection out via the shield, I believe. This would make the pickup possible to switch parallel/series but you would certainly lose the noise cancellation quality of the BB pre-amp. There is also significant volume difference between both modes.

Oh, and I made these repros this week.:D

First off, nice man. I've really been admiring your work. It is true that there is a somewhat significant volume difference, but I can deal with a little bit of noise. I was planning on using a new MB-1E from the RI's.

To be fair I think it won't make that much of a difference given that the SB-1000s are pretty hot anyway. Parallel/series adds a nice tonal option but you will want to take a multimeter to the cable of the pickup and wire it up temporarily to make sure you like it before you committing to drilling a hole in your bass! ;-)

Do you already have the pickup in your hand? I think the last time I saw a photo of one of the new MB-1s it had a different letter designation, like F or something. Under the cover it is more than likely that modern APII MB-1s differ to the original MB-1/MB-1E so I would take the whole thing from scratch and assume so off the bat.

Have you played a narrow-spacing instrument like the SB-1000? You might find it an idea to convert a wider spacing instrument if you prefer that configuration. An Elite-I/R-60 is a fine platform to work from on that basis as long as you have some room for the two batteries....that rotary sucks up a lot of space! In addition the switch used for the active/passive bypass needs to be at least a 3PDT switch which is quite wide meaning adding a DPDT for the parallel/series will mean weirdly orienting them or spacing them a little wider apart. I can't remember off the top of my head whether the inner face of the cavity is specifically recessed for the individual controls....

That said, I just about managed to wangle (great word) two batteries and an active/passive switching system into the tiny cavity of an RSB-600....

I would say do it! The active mode just kills the passive mode to death and that is just from converting basses with MB-II pickups (weird hybrid P/J pickup) not the hot MB-1.

No I don't have the pickup in hand, but I did email Aria USA (Dana B Goods) about it. I believe it still said MB-1E, but I'm not sure. Wire wise, from the picture I could tell it had a red white and ground. Yes I have played an SB-900 and an SB-1000, and I believe the project might either be on a beaten old SB with dead electronics that I found locally (hard to find in Indiana).

Yeah, unfortunately that always seems to be the case with things like the SB-1000s and exactly why I am making more than just one or two BB pre-amps. The basses just got gutted more often than not and commonly refitted with EMGs for some inexplicable reason. Without the BB, the rotary is out of circuit so it becomes the weak link. A shame.

If you end up with an SB-1000 sans EVERYTHING then let me know because I can help run you up a full loom, jack and all. I just have to get this RSB out of the door first. So much to do, so little organised sober time to do it in!

NICE!!!

Unfortunately I had to sell my R60 last year for college expenses/etc. Now I'm a bit more settled in and I'm looking for another. If anyone sees an SB bass for sale for a good price, feel free to PM me.

Expand your search to include the Elite-I also as they were more or less identical to the R60s. If you are considering R80s also, the Elite-II is the corresponding identical model. Just cosmetics, nothing more.

<edit: Or potentially I could build you one Autumn onwards when I have workshop space>

That would be cool. Actually I'm looking for any neck through SB. If I had a preference it would be one of the newer Japanese models or an Elite, but anything would be cool. I might take one as a project, but depending on the instrument, I might just by one completely stock.

I've actually got 2 x Elite l's for sale.
The red one is at auction at the moment, but no bid as of now.
https://sites.google.com/site/teesquared/home/arial-pro-elite-1 That one is in good nick. The other is a black one with dings and dents but good neck and hardware. Black one has a single coil pickup as temporary replacement. One side of the original MB pickup is open circuit. I've been made an offer on the black one but if I don't see his money before the weekend, it will be open to offers again.

pm me if interested.

Best regards

Tee.
