Heh - didn't mean to humble brag, just documenting in case it made a difference in noise chasing. And the Suhr J is awesome sauce. I bought it new @ 5 years ago and it's about as perfect a specimen as you're going to find, assuming what you're looking for is a 60s style J. Highly recommended.

Just picked up an Oracle. I have to say, it is such a spectacular piece of gear. I own a 2013 Fender American Pbass and play weekends on the worship team. Man, plug straight into the oracle and DI into the FOH, unbelievable tone. Nice and full, articulate, really fantastic. The thing is built like a tank and is everything it is advertised to be. No fuss, no muss. Straightaway the best DI pedal I have ever owned. I cant see a day I wouldn't have this plugged in. Incredibly happy with this.

I've not owned an Oracle but, with the Zephyr, the D.I. level (balanced) and the signal to the amp (unbalanced) are independently adjustable. The Gain setting affects the level (along with the feel and harmonic content) of both, though.

EDIT: You know, I'm 99% sure that the amp and D.I. levels shouldn't affect each other, but don't know that I've ever tested that. Remembering my old Mesa Walkabout, on which the D.I. level was adjustable but still affected by the master volume, makes me unsure. Let me check that and get back to you (maybe someone else will know for sure, meanwhile).

Are you referring to the Oracle or the Zephyr, here?

I just performed a quick test, running the Zephyr's XLR DI out into the XLR line input of a Quilter BB800 into a cab. Preamp level (1/4" unbalanced out, not hooked up), whether cranked, turned down to zero, or set somewhere in-between, did not audibly affect the DI level.

Oracle appears to have a similar control setup, so I'd expect it to behave similarly, but I've never played one.

Sorry, should have been clearer - I have a Zephyr. As you noted, the Amp and DI output levels are independent.

I've never had a need to use both outputs at the same time. When I bought the Zephyr, the Oracle hadn't been created yet; it probably would meet my needs. But I don't regret the Zephyr ;)

Gotcha.

I like rack gear -- there are some beautiful preamps in that format and I like the bigger amps and power sections that occupy those racks -- and I rarely use pedals, but I do find myself contemplating something like the Oracle now and then (and I've obviously not shied entirely away from the smaller amps).

That's what you'd call a digression, though -- back to your regularly scheduled show. ;)

Consumption works out the same, move the power transformer outside of the case, reduce noise, and size. And you don't have to worry about the big mains IEC cable. Cioks CRUX would work perfect for this, on a board - it does come with a PSU though.

mine should be here in the next week or so, and I have the crux arriving tomorrow. I’ll post the build once she’s done and tested.

I’m not taking it apart but Micah can answer that I’m sure. I do know that it’s took a bit of wizardry, but so far there is no discernible difference. The noise floor is supposed to be better as well, although I am not certain if that just applies vs the the original oracle, or also against the zef.

The eye lights up, but in a different way. There’s a ring around a flat button which turns it on and off very much like the Rheingold preamp.
