Do the Pillows even have a bass player? Judging from their "Ride on Shooting Star" video, they don't seem to have one.
That would be Jun Suzuki, but he's not an official member. He may as well be since he's played bass for them for most of their lifetime. They've had two other bassists before him.
Kameda from Tokyo Jihen (he's one of my favorites)
Toki from Losalios
Kazu from Blonde Redhead
The singer from Deerhoof
That's a good list and it's good to see other Japanese bassists listed besides tetsu from l'arc en ciel, who is really good but seems to be the only name people know. Some of my other favorites:
- Tomokazu Ninomiya from eastern youth, one of my favorite bands. I really love his fretless Jazz tone and smooth playing. He was originally a metal guitarist!
- Hinata Hidekazu (formerly of) Zazen Boys and Art-School, but he's also a member of Straightener. I think his best work was with Zazen Boys because he used his abilities to the fullest. Zazen Boys' replacement for him, Ichirou Yoshida, is probably even better.
- Manabu Nakagawa of envy. His G&L L-1000 sounds so sweet.
There's also a ton of talented filpino bass players, and most of them are unsigned. I remember seeing a few local acts out in Long Beach and there were quite a few really groovy players. And from the PI, Buddy Zabala formerly of Eraseheads and Buhawi "Buwi" Meneses from Parokya ni Edgar are just a couple of my favorites. I haven't heard some good filipino music in awhile though. Any recommendations for newer bands out there?
By the way, I'm half filipino. No need to give me a number.
