I think Tetsu Yamauchi who replaced Ronnie Lane in the Faces was only mentioned once in this thread, as opposed to the 9 or 10 times everyone else was mentioned.

Another one worth mentioning is Fumi of Polysics, a Japanese Devo-on-meth sounding band. She's pretty darn good.

There are a number of others who have yet to be mentioned:

Danny Cheng - sessions, toured w/Shania Twain
Janis Tanaka - L7
Diane Chai - Alleycats
Bill Asai - sessions, The Dice, other bands
Jean Millington - Fanny
Charlie Tumahai - Be Bop Deluxe
Mark Lau - Hugh Wilson band

I myself, John Seetoo, am ABC, been playing guitar, bass & keys since the 80's and co-founded Nekron 99 - One of the first Asian-American led punk bands in NYC (the other was Screaming Mad George's, "The Mad") on the Max's/CBGB/Danceteria/Mudd Club circuit. Our EP was released on Bomp! Records and distributed in 7 countries. It was re-released on CD in Germany by Incognito Records a few years ago. MTV's "Basement Tapes" program ran our "Reincarnations" video and it was voted into the quarterfinals.

I still do sessions, most recently slide guitar on Washington DC based hip hop artist Joe L. Da Vessel's CD - "Testimony:1 Lyrics 4 Life".

Are you going to challenge me for the title of world's greatest hiphop bassist? :p

It's kind of sad that there have been about 10 mentions of John Myung yet not one mention of Haruomi Hosono. He's played on more albums than all the bassists in this thread combined. He's most popular for his work in the band Yellow Magic Orchestra, but he's also well-known as a member of Happy End and Sketch Show. He's basically one of the most influential Japanese musicians (around before Ryuichi Sakamoto). He's obviously an amazing songwriter, producer, and synth player as well.

Some of the more famous Japanese players I can think of:

Kameda from Tokyo Jihen (he's one of my favorites)
Toki from Losalios
Kazu from Blonde Redhead
The singer from Deerhoof

Yeah! The singer from Deerhoof. Totally.

Also, not sure he's been mentioned yet:
Stomu Takeishi

First heard him on the Vietnamese trumpet player, Cuong Vu's album, "Come Play With Me." Then heard his stuff with Henry Threadgill's bands. Then, even got to see one of his projects open for us and invited him up for our set and we both played bass for most of the night! He's a killer dude.
Like Mick Karn, he mainly plays a Klein bass.
