Asking the father

That is some crazy ****. It's part of being a parent to meet and familiarize themselves with the significant other that their child is dating, but having to ask just to date his daughter when you're that young seems ridiculous. But congratulations and have fun, you are young and still experiencing the world. Make sure she is respected and best of luck.

Well I just got back. Drove over there and talked to him. He certainly is a lot nicer than what I've heard about him.

I got my button up shirt on and drove my dads truck instead of my beater.

Shook his hand, give him my little speech. His response "I like you L, I am going to give you 1 chance. If I hear anything iffy of any sorts or I find out something I don't like. I will beat your a$$ so hard you won't remember your own name." then he smiled and shut the door.

I think that went well?

Well done, young man. You took the correct approach, and you will have the father's respect for that. I applaud you.

I like this guy. Both of you.

It sounds like he may be overly protective because he is away so often. It is always a good idea to make a favorable impression on a girls parents. Many kids seem to have very little respect for adults in general.

The fact that he said he likes you shows it was a good move. Be a gentleman and always show respect when you call on the phone. I am sure you will be the subject of positive conversation over dinner.

Good on ya, buddy. Now don't screw it up :)

Peace,
Greg

You need to invite him to Fight Club so you can see if he can actually do that.

He was an air force pilot for 10 years before he became a commercial pilot, I don't doubt for a second he could do it.

As for everyone else thanks a lot really encouraging! Now to just not screw up anything from this point on, that's the tricky part!

If you want to get an in with him read-up about planes and find out about his favorite planes.

I'm not hating on you bro, I'm rooting for you. You did good, man. If I was your age (I'm 23 now) and I had to do something like that I would probably not have been able to. Like legit I would have been too scared.

Told ya it would work!

Now memorize Mike Damone's 5-point plan and you are home free:

[the "five-point plan"] First of all Rat, you never let on how much you like a girl. "Oh, Debbie. Hi."

Two, you always call the shots. "Kiss me. You won't regret it."

Now three, act like wherever you are, that's the place to be. "Isn't this great?"

Four, when ordering food, you find out what she wants, then order for the both of you. It's a classy move. "Now, the lady will have the linguini and white clam sauce, and a Coke with no ice."

And five, now this is the most important, Rat. When it comes down to making out, whenever possible, put on side one of Led Zeppelin IV. :bassist:

last time i had to ask the father for permission to date the daughter, the relationship ended two weeks after we began officially going out. apparently her having her "daddie's" permission to date me had her all freaking out over being in too "serious" of a relationship. :hmm:

i dont really have anything constructive to add here.

good luck.:)

Good move buddy. Don't bother with the people who think what you did was outdated or uncalled for. Showing respect and honor to adults is nothing to be ashamed of.

-Mike

Meh, ignoring that the OP is an adult himself, I see these things more as crapping on the legacy of Betty Friedan and everyone else who tried to break humanity free from these patriachal social structures where men own women and you have to ask father's permission to see or marry their legally-adult, consenting daughters. Why don't we rescind the 19th Amendment while we're at it? Not saying the OP was consciously doing that; it sounds like he really didn't have a choice in the matter.
