Asymmetrical necks… only MTD or Warmoth?

Hi everyone,

so I routinely comb through asymmetrical neck posts and hadn’t seen one for awhile and haven’t ever posted myself on this.

are there more builders out there that do asymmetrical? Or is it really just MTD and Warmoth.

I have pretty small hands so the neck of my MTD Beast I’ve had for 20+ years is still a favorite and nothing else felt comfortable (even Geddy Lee Fender). So I bought the Kingston Z4 to give myself a more modern soap bar active electronics and also love the neck again (even more as this one isn’t glossed).

I know Warmoth does some too - never had chance to play… that may be another option for me too.

I love my MTDs but with the USA being out of my reach ($5k???) just always on lookout for something more in the $2-3k range that could be an option down the line.

Carvin rebranded to Kiesel right? Anyone have experience with those? They don’t have the Bass builder setup yet (guitar is)… can’t really tell if they have an asymmetrical… maybe should reach out

Yeah, Carvin is Kiesel now. I just did a quick Google and it looks Bunny Brunel is/was with ESP now (this article is from 2015 so I am really out of date here...) ESP Guitars Announces Two New Bunny Brunel Signature Basses

It does cite an assymetrical neck still.

Some Ibanez BTB basses have had them in the past. Not sure if they still do.

Fender Roscoe Beck Signature V basses do as well, I believe. No longer made, of course.

haha, ok fair enough! If gigs pick up in the coming year and my tax break is as good next year as this… Maybe I can afford the MTD USA I’ve been dreaming of…

Warmoth has some nice looking builds too for a variety of prices… anyone have experience with those? Audio clips and links desired if available.

That’s such a strange fit… ESP reads nothing but METAL to me typically… not Jazz/fusion. I saw a demo of it and bass sounded nice… doesn’t look like that as a signature model is on their website anymore though.

Does everyone who loves asymmetrical necks just play MTDs like I do? Do they have that much of a lock on that market? I mean good for them, they are awesome but just maybe I’m super weird in my attachment to the asymmetrical neck… or maybe enough people just haven’t played one to know they want one…?

Back in the early '90s the Modulus Quantum [edit: not Quantum, Genesis] bass had an asymmetrical neck profile designed by Mike Tobias, but I have no idea whether the current ones use that same shape.

Yep, at least for the 5 and 6 stringers. I have a BB75 and the neck is to die for!

My son has a Carvin 5 string LB75X (35.25" scale) and it has an asymmetrical neck.

Some times Carvin's show up used for sale.

Of all Carvin models, only the Bunny Brunel series came with an asymmetrical neck standard. It was a special order item on the other models, so getting a Carvin bass does not automatically mean you're getting an Asymmetrical neck. In fact, I think the 4 string version of the Brunel model did not have that feature as a rule, either.

I will say the BB75 does have a lovely neck, but it also has a 19mm spacing at the bridge, which some people think is too wide, but I love it.

Edit: The current LTD Bunny Brunel models have asymmetrical necks as well.

I owned a Kiesel Xccelerator. A quality instrument but the neck wasn’t asymmetrical.

Actually, that's the Modulus Genesis. There's a Modulus logo on the truss rod cover at the base of the neck, part of the circle around the logo is actually tiny letters that say "Designed by Michael Tobias Design". I don't know if that's referring to just the neck, or the whole bass; the neck profile is Mike's work for sure, but the Genesis body design is very similar to a MTD Saratoga.

Isn't the so called "modern C" neck profile from Fender asymmetric?

Also... Don't the Fender Ultra and Elite series have asymmetric necks and progressive profiles (where the profile changes as you move down the neck)?

Nino Valenti and Jake Serek both do asymmetrical necks by request.

Nino offers different thicknesses.

My Dingwall Super J is not listed as being asymmetrical but when I sight down the neck profile it looks slightly flatter on the G string side and slightly rounder on the E string side. That might be my eye playing tricks on me though. If it is asymmetrical it's a pretty small difference compared to something like what I feel on a friend's MTD basses.

I have a Warmoth Telecaster guitar with the Wolfgang neck profile and I absolutely love it. The appeal of asymmetry in a neck profile is certainly not lost on me. Good luck on your search.
