Started at 13 and all these decades later , could not imagine life without it . I would not have a lot of the things I have now without playing music ....the people I have met , the travel (just back from 2 weeks in Europe ) and a healthy income from a guy who doesn't stand out in a crowd .

Started when I was 13 or 14. Just turned 60. Still suck.

Two years ago at almost exactly 70.5 years old.

and we have the same bass!!

I put the 41-50 as I was 42 when I properly started playing. I did have a 5 string Yamaha in my 20s for a project that lasted less than 6 months before I went back to 6 strings.

Fast forward many years and I'm forming a band as bassist with some friends. Now onto a new project and my 8th or 9th bass with at least one (maybe two) more project(s) to follow in the short term.

I started playing bass at age 15. January 1994 was when I started taking lessons at a mom 'n pop music shop near me. My teacher was about my grandfather's (RIP) age and some of the best musicians in my area had gone through him. I learned so much from him about bass AND life.

I just turned 44 about a month ago.

I'm nowhere near as good as I should be, given the lengthy periods of time in my life when I wasn't playing at all. But if I'm any good at all, it's because of the lessons my old teacher instilled in me.

Double bass: 10, 4th grade, elem school orch
Electric bass guitar: 6th grade, summer between elem and jr high - 7th grade

Dropped double bass 8th grade. WORST decision of my life. Tried to pick it up again in college when I was 20. Didn't work out even with 4+ hrs a day. Oh well. It's all good. Did very well with electric. IF you play double bass NEVER stop! 2¢

Being surrounded by music while growing up, my dad always had a guitar or a bass lying around our appartment. My first acoustic was when i was 5, first electric guitar was at 6, & i had started playing my dad's jay turser beatle bass around 6-7 years old. Though my very own first bass (squier pbass affinity series pack) was when i was 8, i started playing (in dedication to it) at 6-7 years into life. Never took lessons, learning bands such as the Ramones, Kiss, the Clash, Guns & Roses, motley crue, to sly & the family stone, michael jackson, parliement funkadelic for the more funky grooves, & "new" bands such as; a day to remember, offspring, green day, Paramore, Muse, billy talent. Its an endless list, having dabbled into lots of genres, all by ear. I've no music theory whatsoever, cant read music sheets, might know my scales - though i play what sounds best for whatever song i may be writing.

Now, at level 28 in life, i've ammassed a collection of electric guitars & basses, couple of acoustics, a synthesizer keyboard, & lots of recording gear. Am the lyricist, bassist & lead vocalist in my punk/anything-everything band. Am mainly a pick player, though when it calls for fingerstyle or slapping, i can hold my own.

By no means am i the greatest, i've simply had enough years of practice to be proficient, & playing with different drummers has improved my flow, groove, & timing. & i'm still learning new things every day.

When I started off, yes. Over the last 20 years, whatever the song calls for, but pick playing is still my favorite method.
