Atkinson basses new website and model

Yeah, about a woodshop class. Not about the business of building and selling basses.

It also applies to building guitars and basses.

I've repaired and assembled guitars and basses from parts for a few decades. I would never consider that assembly to be luthiery, it's assembly of pre-made parts.

The luthiery aspect in those cases comes after the instruments are assembled during the final stages, fret leveling and dressing, nut work, and other aspects of setup. Aspects of the customizing of those pre-made parts and repair of instruments could also fall under luthiery.

The instruments by Krappy, Wishnevsky, and others have more luthery in them than merely screwing parts together.

mongo,

Please man, just stop. Did you see Bryan's comment last page? He's about to lock this thread. Please move along.

My cash offer still stands.

Dan, how well does the grain show through on the alder bodies with the sunburst? Are there any examples in the gallery section of the site?

Here's one in alder:

Someone mentioned a tweek of the headstock shape and Dan said it would cost a little more for the bass, but not that much more. It would make sense to come up with a different headstock shape and continue to do what he was doing - building complete basses. There are so many Fender style basses already out there, it might be a challenge to come up with something different, yet still cool-looking - BUT, it would be a nice way to say "screw that" and keep your thing going. They can't touch you if your headstock is different, no?

Yeah, that's what I'm doing with the new Evoke series I'm working on. It's about as different as the Lakland shape is. Not drastic. I think I'll keep the pics on my site to a minimum, and will probably not show the entire headstock in a single pic for good measure.

The problem is that my source for the Evokes is USACG. They make phenomenal stuff, but they have stopped offering custom headstocks. So my only option is to hand tweak one of their existing headstocks. My initial thought was to tweak their USB4 design, since it is way different, so I ordered one. But when the neck arrived I was shocked at how tiny the headstock was. It looked absurd. It's basically a guitar size headstock on a bass neck.

I bought this bass from Dan on Ebay a while back. I wanted a lightweight P Bass because my other two Precisions are almost 10, and 11 pounds, and I rarely use the tone knob. This bass was perfect for me.

I really like the bass. Top quality parts, electronics, well set up, it's all there. And about 8 pounds.

Dan does good work, and is a good guy to deal with.

Dan,
One last thought on the Evoke series:
Consider a 2 band EQ section so that any of us that are interested in a light weight, US made, econo Stingray could either use the Unlce Fluffy PC board or the John East pre.

Really believe that there is a market for an 8lb, well set up Ray for under a grand.
Don't think anybody offers such an animal and even the MM Ray34's are in the 10lb + range.

Have a Nordy pup and a Fluffy loaded board, a decent parts bass, and a router but believe that you can build a better instrument than I.

Now, get back in the shop and make us proud!

I KEEP thinking about this bass....

Can't stop..

They stopped the custom head stocks? They still list Nino and two others as custom stocks....when did they do this? I am seriously thinking of my own template and buying friggin paddle heads and cutting my own!

The one I'm building is going to have a 2-band Aguilar OBP-2 installed. Weight should be in the ballpark of 8.5 pounds.

Yeah. I forget the story. Tommy said something about how the guy who did the CNC programming left or got fired. So they can't create anything new until they hire somebody else. But they could probably cut you something by hand for some extra $$$.

That thing is crazy light. It weighed in at 7.7 pounds on my scale.

this thread needs closed... just alternating between epeen waving and self-promotion

Nothing wrong with this thread. I didn't start it. The OP was seeking info on my product line. He and others have asked questions, I have responded. It got ugly for a couple of pages because of 2 members who took it in a nasty direction, but hopefully we are past that now. If you don't have any interest in my basses, no need to read this thread.
