Atkinson basses new website and model

Nothing wrong with this thread. I didn't start it. The OP was seeking info on my product line. He and others have asked questions, I have responded. It got ugly for a couple of pages because of 2 members who took it in a nasty direction, but hopefully we are past that now. If you don't have any interest in my basses, no need to read this thread.

You've turned it into a marketing tool to hawk your wares.

If someone is interested in your products they can go to your business website and ask you there. You shouldn't be conducting business on Talkbass.

Ah, the voice of reason. Thanks Bryan! I appreciate the mods and what is sometimes a thankless job you guys do on here.

this thread needs closed... just alternating between epeen waving and self-promotion

Can't disagree more. I think it is great to be able to talk to a builder and learn about the process and his own take on it. I have found it very informative and it has created alot of excitement for me that I could get a custom P built exactly how I want without having to pay $2000.

And if Dan gets a little promotion out of that I don't see the big deal. TB is not some rarefied academic setting, although many seem to want it to be. It is about having fun, learning a lot, and increasing one's mental horizons about the world of bass, and this thread, and all the Atkinson threads have done that for me even if I never buy an Atkinson.

Certain people seem to be just desperate to find something to complain about in this thread. Give it a rest.

The one I'm building is going to have a 2-band Aguilar OBP-2 installed. Weight should be in the ballpark of 8.5 pounds.

I've got an Aguilar OBP-2 in my Jaguar, and it's a very nice preamp. Very ballsy, without being harsh, and best of all it only uses one 9v battery.

Ok, fine. The part where the business owner was openly offering to bribe the flame queen... just dunt feel like tb to me :hiding:

The bit about a small business making clones, legal challenges, etc. was very interesting to me. Prob'ly everyone who enjoys building things as a hobby has fantasized about how it'd be to do for profit.

The finishes look fantastic, and that someone can get a parts-bass to sell for more than the parts themselves is awesome. :bassist:

As far as Fender -- Obviously, they're the most copied maker in the biz, and I think they go after everyone. I have a guitar I got way way back that I like a lot, and the company got shut down just cuz of the name. It's Vester, which has 50% of the same letters as Fender. Welcome to USA where two Es and an R will get you a C&D. Absurd, yes. But it's hard to fight deep pockets without deep pockets of your own.

Well, I do all my tone shaping on my amp, or on a preamp in studio. I never touch the tone knob either. So for many of the basses I've built for myself, I either don't install one or don't wire it in.

The signal is a bit more "pure" that way. Because even with the tone wide open, it still has a slight impact on your sound.

Just as a BTW, if you have a conventional CTS/Alpha/etc. pot with the metal case (plastic Bourns pots won't work), you can peel back the four tabs on the case, then scrape off just a small amount of the resistive mat'l touching the clockwise lug (looking down the shaft). This will create a "no load" pot without having to buy one. When you turn the pot fully CW, there's no connection to anything, so the only loading is the negligible resistance/reactance in the wiring to/from the tone pot.

Once you're done with the scraping, you put the case back on and bend the tabs back.

Nice, easy mod to do. I use an X-Acto knife to scrape with. (I did this for the Fralin Strat Blender mod. Will it blend? Why, yes.)

I am also interested in the Aguilar OBP-2. It seems VERY similar to the Sadowsky pre-amp which I just love, but cost about 1/4 as much. Can anyone comment on the difference between these two who have had experiences.

I've got the obp2 in my valenti. It sounds very musical. Not much different from the sadowsky accept I really have little use for the bass cut.

Ironicly, Fender offer these pots with a no load, wide open position; would think that whoever makes them will also sell direct

Thank you sir! I am enjoying the Q/A with Dan. Sorry others aren`t. And yeah, we NEVER see builders "praising their own work" on TB. On a lighter note, maybe in light of the Fender debacle (and this thread), Dan could rename his Retro line to Provoke, to go along with the Evokes.
