Atkinson basses... who owns one?

Your video demos sound excellent. May I ask your signal chain? Are you using the NA320 and the LDS? How are you capturing the sound (mics and preamps and whatnots?). You really do nail the vintage tone with your playing and your basses. You don't have to reveal all your secrets, though

Actually, it's all direct. I just plug into my DMP3 preamp and record in Cubase. I do throw a touch of EQ and compression on with plugins, but no amp modeling.

Most of James Jamerson's stuff was recorded that way. Just pure, raw bass tone!

Definitely. I built that bass for me, and I wanted the finish SUPER thin. It has maybe 7 total coats of lacquer.

Thanks Dan, it looks awesome! I can't wait to give it a go. For all you Atkinson fans who've been asking for a 5 string, here's one way to do it. When I saw the chambered 5 string body was available, I asked Dan to build me one. I had a vision of what it would be like. He graciously took on the project & this is the result. I will post a review here as soon as I have had a chance to play it a bit. Visually it came out just as I imagined it. Thanks again, Mr A!

Not having it in my hands yet, I can't address the neck dive question. However, the ultra light weight of the Hipshot tuners would make it less likely. Dan is the only person to play it yet, so maybe he'll chime in.

BTW it has DiMarzio Ultra Jazz pickups, 35" scale & an Allparts bridge which resembles a Hipshot "B" bridge. All passive electronics.

It is slightly neck heavy, but no more so than a typical Fender P bass with standard tuners would be. That's a small tradeoff for the overall lighter weight.

When I play it on my lap, I don't feel like I'm supporting it with my left hand.

Dan will probably have some pricing info on his site very soon. I can say this: if the 5er performs as well as the '51 Precision he made for me, I've spent a long time & lots of money looking for Dan Atkinson.
