Atkinson basses... who owns one?

I received the '51 P bass pictured in Dan's post yesterday & played it at my gig last night. Fantastic sound & great playability. It weighs in at 7.1lbs. It came with some round wound strings, which sounded good, but I'm a flat wound player. I slapped a set of lighter Sadowskys(40-100) on her & she started getting THE SOUND right away. The S. Duncan pup was smoking, a very solid sound. One can't help but think that an added Jazz style bridge pup would make this bass even more versatile (an idea for future builds). However, for my needs it's just about perfect as is & I'm entirely satisfied so far.
So let's sum up the 1st gig with the new Atkinson '51P bass: Great tone....7.1 lbs....killer looks....bandmates impressed....bass geeks in audience fascinated...reasonable price for having it done MY WAY.....started to pay for itself right off the bat. What else is there? I urge you to try one. Great job Dan. Now, on to the next miracle!

Cool thread! Most of the basses in the pics don't do a whole lot for me but some just MIGHT... Especially cool when a builder can participate in the thread and keep everything extremely civil. Dan seems like a very cool cat, and that makes the prospect of checking out one of these basses that much more interesting to me. Good stuff!

well i jumped in--talked to dan, and he's going to do a sonic blue P with Lollars and a vintage-spec neck...can hardly wait to hear this one, it's been a little over 2 years since i've owned a precision, and i've been really wanting one for a specific project...:)

After playing the 51P a bit more, I'm becoming aware of the fact that my original 1969 Telecaster bass never sounded this good. I have records made with it in as good a studio as there was back then. The response on the Atkinson bass is much nicer. Whereas the 69 was kind of heavy & thick feeling, the Atkinson feels alive when played. It resonates & you can feel it. It sings in my hands. Very few instruments do that. No matter what the price is.

moe--this is the kind of review i like to read just after ordering...thanks, and i understand exactly what you mean about feeling one resonate while playing.

Man you are singing my song! I am just waiting for my tax return to order this exact bass! I too have been leaning towards going with the Lollars instead of the Dimarzio's or Duncans or even Nordy's as I have read very good things, and Nash uses them in their retro basses. What is your thinking about using Lollar's, have you used them before?

cool man--on the lollars, i've used his J pickups in 2 different basses, and i really dig them--that experience, along with what i've read and heard about his P pickups, and i didn't have to think too long!

If I like the Atkinson P, I would then want to order a J. I have read only so-so reviews of Lollar J's on harmony central, but then I always take those with a grain of salt. Then again, everything i have read about Lollar P's has been glowing. Obviously you had a great experience with your J's.

I believe savit260 (I think I got his ID right) has a Lollar P pickup on his SX and really digs it.
