Audere got it right!!!

I'm a huge East (J-Retro, U-Retro) fan and have several basses with those preamps but I got a Nordy VJ5 with the Audere a couple days ago so I'll post a comparison when I've a little more time with the Audere.

I'm interested in hearing a comparison of these. I am a big fan of East preamps as well and have been trying to decide between an Audere and a U-Retro for my APDV.

this preamp was super easy to install- no soldering required as advertised.

the sound is amazing. it makes me grateful for having upgraded to nordstrand pickups as it really brings out their character.

Anybody running the Audere with a G&L L2500?

yup - and it's killer!

3 band 3ZB Stacked Mid on Blend, treble on Bass. Neck to bridge, the switches are z-mode, single, parallel, series for the neck pickup coils and single, parallel, series, for the bridge pickup.

Install with the MFD's is fairly easy. The MFD's adhere to the Dimarzio humbucker wiring scheme and there are diagrams on the net for wiring in the sPs switch. You need 2 dpdt on-on-on switches. I got mine from Stew Mac - the G&L top is a little thick and the Stew Mac switch hasa little longer barrel. The All Parts switch will work, but only just...

The one twist with installing is that you have to pull the MFD's out. There is a green wire that is soldered to the back of the magnet in two places. It is part of the grounding scheme I guess. That has to be unsoldered and the two pieces have to be jumped together to make 1 wire that goes to the cavity...

You loose the passive mode operation of the G&L but MFD's love the Audere ... the low z-mode is just way down deep...

This one is strung E through C and has TI Super Alloys .030 through .105 installed. I dig this bass a lot!

on one control layout it has volume mid/balance bass/treble my questions is that how do the tone controls really change the sound? also what is balance referring to? lastly is the Zmode switch realistically useable?

I have that configuration in my Lakland DJ4 bass, and it sounds amazing.
The tone controls really do change the sound, they have a good range of tones.
The balance is referring to the balance between the output of the neck pickup and the bridge pickup.
Personally, I just use the Z-Mode switch in the normal position. High-Z is a little too clanky/hi-fi for me (I do use a rig that could be considered full-range- Genz GBE1200 into a Whappo Jr.). Low-Z is really cool ( a lot more low end), but I haven't found a realistic application for it yet.
I love this preamp, it was one of the best investments that I have made. It really brought my DJ4 to life.

Excellent choice. I wasn't in love with the tone from my DJ4 before the Audere (passive) but loved the look and feel. I am still blown away by the range of tones that i get. I'm sure you won't be dissapointed.

just ordered the classic pre for my Ibanez BTB406..

I got it volume, blend, lo mid, high mid, bass/treble stacked. I will probably add a active passive switch somewhere down the line..
