Audere got it right!!!

I bought my jazz bass back in 2000 new. MIM jazz standard just because it was the best playing bass in the store, American or not it just felt right.

I installed a BAII, Basslines, American knobs and new pickguard a week later and never touched it upgrade wise until now in fear of ruining it's sound.

It has been my go to bass for the last 7 years without fail.

I have been doing more home recording and needed a little more volume from the pickups and a little more rear end so I actually spent the last 5-6 months buying and selling basses not liking the sound compared to my Jazz. The list: American Deluxe Precision, Music Man SUB x2, Tobias Growler, Ibanez 82 p-bass (should have kept it for other reasons), Ampeg short scale solid body, Fender Mustang reissue and a few others as well with no luck.

I finally decided I might get a pre-amp. As a test I picked up an Audere (JZ3-VB-3B) on here used figuring if I didn't like it I could always resell it for about what I had it in it. Well I installed it tonight and............

I can say the middle setting IS my bass pre-Audere, using the switches with the extra EQing it is letting me fill in the frequencies I was missing with little or no coloration. I am getting my good woody jazz sound with my Hot and Vintage basslines with a little extra gain and EQ.

I can honestly say I can see where this thing would improve any Fender Jazz out of the box really.

I know this sounds like a review, but I can't really give a full review due to some temporary hearling loss due to an antibiotic so I can't crank it yet :crying:

So, I'd like to know from the people who have Audere JZ3's installed: is it a problem that the second knob is a stack, with the Blend and the Mid Boost/Cut? That was mentioned in the Bass Player magazine review of the Nordy VJ5's. Seems like an odd pairing of functions, and likely to cause problems. The reviewer also didn't like the Z mode switch right next to the mid/blend knob. What is your experience with this?

I have to decide pdq between the JZ3, and the Aguilar OBP3, on my Nordy VJ4. Knob placement is kind of important, right up there with How Does It Sound. But people are saying the JZ3 sounds pretty fine.

Yeah it can take a really good bass and take it to the next level.

It isn't a problem for me. Like any preamp or new bass you get you have to learn what each knob does. I have about 10 active basses, and most of them have different layouts in some way. Some have bass, mid and treble controls with the bass control nearest the neck and the treble nearest the bridge, and others have it the opposite. On my Carvin it goes bass/treble/mid, which seems counterintuitive, but works fine. The Z-mode switch is fine too. I don't see how the layout would be a problem for most people. It might take a day or two to get used to it, but from then on you are good.

By the way, the Audere JZ3 is the best sounding preamp I have. Get it, you won't be sorry IMO.

Okay, I'm pretty much sold on the Audere pre for my passive CB 5. What would be the best control configuration for a 4 knob layout? I'm thinking along the lines of Vol / Blend / Treble / Bass but I believe there are also high and low mid options. Don't want to add a lot of EQ that's of little or no benefit.
