Double Bass Audio Sprockets ToneDexter

If you look on the Audio Sprockets site the BP-100 isn't compatible with the Tone Dexter.

Yea, I except I have been using a bp100 on my Kolstein travel bass with the ToneDexter (and an old Fishman eq in front of it) for a few months now and it sounds pretty darn good...... much better than the bp100 should sound. I think the ToneDexter work just fine with it and on that bass I like it better than some other combinations I have tried. Been meaning to send them a note and ask what problems they had. Meanwhile I say try whatever you have as far as mics and pickups and see what you end up with.

Yeah, my understanding is that the big issue with the Realist is that it doesn't have a lot of high-frequency response. So when the ToneDexter hears the mic's response in the upper ranges, and tries to emulate it with the output of the Realist, it gets pretty "artificial." Kind of a "you can't enhance/create what isn't there" sort of deal.

That's not to say it won't work at all, and won't provide some improvement - but the tone is usually more profoundly enhanced with pickups that provide sufficient high frequency output to modify.

You should do that, they were very receptive when we discovered that the Ehrlund EAP worked with the Tone Dexter.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. The previous poster said he got his BP100 to sound "much better than the BP100 should sound", and maybe that's what I could expect from the Realist. That being said, I'm VERY happy with the way the KMA pickup sounds in conjunction with TD, and don't expect I'll ever NEED the Realist again. But if I ever do, I'll have a wave map for it.

I had been a bit in the fence about my dex but was holding out judgement until I straightened out my string and pickup situation. The new wavemaps I'm making sound great, smooth, yet powerful. The dex didn't work well for me on gigs with my previous setup, this weekend will be telling! Now I'm wondering if I should have it modded it to the 10megohm?? I have an fdeck, but the less boxes the better!

Well? Did it arrive? How did your experiments go? Inquiring minds want to know... ;-) I'm really only playing one wave map (ribbon mic, 12" from bridge) and tweaking it, but I'm loving mine!

I don't think this is the case. The 10Mohm input is a hardware thing on Newer Tonedexters. I believe that there is a date after which all of them have that option but before that date they do not. James?

From the Version 1.4 User Manual:

“ Input impedance: 1MΩ if using a standard mono plug, 10MΩ if using a TRS plug with RING unconnected.”

I assumed that if you had an earlier version and upgraded to the v.1.40 firmware your unit gained this functionality, but maybe I’m mistaken.
