So far, I've only had it about as loud as I can get away with in my basement apartment, which is still pretty loud. Excellent clarity and depth, and it sounds much "bigger" than it is. There's no compression, farting, or any indication that it's working hard, even when slapping the low E or playing down on the low B. With a little parametric EQ love from the Eden, it's great-sounding for electric cello too.

Even standing to the side, you hear the mids and highs clearly, which you don't usually get with guitar or bass cabs. And, at 34 lbs with a well-placed handle it's very subway-capable.

Duke was a stand-up guy to deal with. Very up-front, honest, and down to earth, and you can tell he loves talking about and building speaker cabs. Fit and finish is excellent and all the little details like the recessed handles, airtight Speakon+1/4" combo jacks and bombproof switches are well-thought-out and executed.

This is my first experience with this sort of modern cab design, and I'm extremely impressed. It will be getting a trial by fire at a friend's halloween party tomorrow night!

Good deal!
The driver's suspension will probably break-in more quickly with them out as they restrict the cone's movement.

I'd give it a few days of playing before trying the ports plugged; should get a better indication of how much low end and overall SPL they will attenuate.

BTW -- congratulations!
I'd love to hear one of these.

I also forgot - he bent over backwards to help get me this in time for a gig tomorrow. I am extremely appreciative, as my smallest "giggable" rig is one of the two Eden monstrosities in the pictures back there... and I was not relishing the idea of trying to get those into a subway or cab!

Alright, now that I'm awake, time for a review!

The 'schlepability' was excellent. I could walk right through the turnstiles in the subways with my bass on my back, my amp on my shoulder, and the cab in a hand. The cab is a relatively easy one-handed carry, although I carried it two-handed most of the time, and in that way it weighed almost nothing.

The gig wasn't particularly large (a good-sized basement), nor the drummer particularly hard-hitting, nor the guitarist particularly loud (competing with one of those 40w 1x12 Fender Hot Rod Deluxe combos) but I could easily and clearly hear myself just about anywhere in the room despite being wedged in a corner, and it sounded great! Clean, clear, articulate, and deep. We played mostly 90s alternative rock covers/originals, with a couple of earlier rock/punk songs thrown in.

I used a little grit through a VT Bass pedal for some songs, and the 3.5k "rolloff" switch along with the bass's tone knob worked well to make it less "fizzy" on top. I can now see why the Markbass VLE knob can be useful on an amp though, crazier levels of grit can get a bit synthy through a more full-range cab!

I had a great time, and the schlep home wasn't bad either despite having had a few beers after the show.

So, verdict? Loud, clean, clear, versatile, portable, and sounded great! The guitarist and drummer both said they noticed a substantial difference compared to rehearsals (where I used a 75w Line 6 1x10 combo, so I'd hope they would!) even without me asking about it. I don't have any pictures, though; I forgot to bring the camera (and a spare patch cable for my tuner) in my hurry to leave.

great review. nice to hear you found use for the old school switch. the horn really responds well to distortion if you can get it rolled off. whoda thunk an svt guy like me would like a horn on bass, but i do.

Hey guys. Just got my cover for my second Thunderchild from LeCover, and Larry seems to have changed the spec a touch from my original spec.

My original is on the right, which has a cutout for the entire handle area, including the route. The one I just received (it is still a bit wrinkled up since I just took it out of the box) has a more traditional cutout just large enough for the actual handle.

Both work fine. 'My version' is a bit easier on the hand but offers a touch less protection I guess, versus the more traditional 'just large enough for the handle'.

So, for those of you who have cabs coming, and want a LeCover (highly recommended) you might clarify with him which design you want. Minor deal, but just FYI so there are no surprises versus my original picture.

I can remember reading somewhere about the oversize horn and driver used in this cab. Did I miss what it was or what? Does anyone know what the horn and lens are, or is that proprietary stuff? The sound samples sound great!

The horn is the Pyle PH612, which you can see at this link:

I prefer the Pyle to the JBL equivalent because the Pyle has metal threads.

The lack of characteristic horn sound is partially because this is an unusually low-coloration horn to begin with; partially because I modify it a bit; but mostly because of the crossover.

Larry actually just called me to ask which "opening" I wanted. Another +1 for service from him... I've gotten four covers from him in the past without issue.

So I'm assuming you think the Thunder Child is a 'keeper'?

[...maybe you should move it from your GAS list to your current setup list... -- I know, you're too busy enjoying the cab -- I probably would be too. :) ]
