AudioKinesis 1x12 Cab Part Two

I am definitely looking for the most "uncolored" cab possible that can be used for live acoustic instruments as well as recorded music... and with very uniform dispersion... :)

I use guitar synth and processed vocals in Passing Wind (besides bass, of course), it would be a huge bonus to be able to use this cab for those things in coffee house and winery settings. The possibility of doing monitoring with it at the same time is even more appealing.

I think it would make a really high quality monitor for especially synth and vocals.

OK, I think I've heard enough to weigh in on this now. I just tried patching a mike and my electric upright through the TCAF at the same time, using a nice Ashly channel strip into the effects return bus of my DIY preamp for the mike side. That puts the vocals post- the EQ of the bass preamp, and the channel strip has a 4 band parametric EQ which I can use for the mike. Simply put, this kills. I can rehearse at home with no need to hook up my PA, and I'm sure I could get by on many gigs just doing this to get my vocals out in the room in my duo. I could also run an aux out off a mixer into my rig and have a workable monitor mix, as long as my cab placement doesn't create feedback issues. This is just a huge bonus in my case.

Synth worked very well too, but I quickly found out that I need to re-write many patches that were done back when I used a 15 w/ whizzer cone in my stage rig.

On to guitar with a modeler tomorrow...:bassist:

The TC112AF is beginning to sound imperative. If there's a TC115AF on the horizon, my glee may be uncontrollable.

I haven't had a chance to design the crossover for the TC115AF yet, but don't forsee any significant hurdles. It is definitely in the pipeline.

I had a couple friends express a strong interest in that. Do you have an impression of the added sensitivity and expense?

Sensitivity goes up by 2.4 dB to 97.4 dB (based on Thiele/Small parameters), and projected cost of the TC115AF would be about $950.

Duke, is the 115 going to be using a 3015LF stock given the current situation?

Nope. The 3015LF doesn't go up high enough to match up with a small-format horn; I'd have to go with a large-format horn (1.4" or 2" compression driver, expensive if neodymium, very heavy if not). So, the horn + woofer format is not really practical. Greenboy's solution remains the best approach to using the 3015LF, and if anything the gap has widened. I see no point in essentially copying him, as that wouldn't significantly expand the choices that bass players have.

My 115 cab will use a 4-ohm woofer that has almost as much excursion as the 3015LF, but top-end extension and efficiency that are pretty close to the 3015 (non-LF). So it will work with a small-format compression driver, assuming I do my job on the crossover.

I've gotten several inquiries off-line about what's going to happen to my prices (give you three guesses!), and when (soon, but not immediately). Once I have the specifics sorted out, I'll post something.

how much are these

$700 plus shipping for the TC112 (not sure about the AF version). I don't think the 15 has been priced yet. As Duke posted, Eminence raised their wholesale prices on their neo drivers, so that will be going up a touch soon.

The TC112 price is not cheap, but a good value given the wump that little box puts out, and its price is in line with other top of the line 112's from Epi or Bergantino.

I believe the current projected price for the TC15 is $850. I agree, Duke's cabs are worth every penny.

First gig with mine tomorrow night, assuming my cold subsides a bit by then.

So I finally got a chance to hear the acoustic-friendly version in some typical gigging contexts last night. Small winery open mike (100 capacity), minimalist drum kit, acoustic guitar, electric guitar (Fender Super), keys, alto sax, a couple of singers. I was playing my EUB, using my overkill-ish DIY rack "head". Set of Beatles ballads, set of uptempo alt-classic folk rock, and my set of deconstructed jazz standards (Gangsta-rap Autumn Leaves etc.) The place was busy but not crazy, maybe 60 patrons during my sets.

This is usually the toughest room I play in; boom is always lurking and my ears are often ringing into the next morning. Last night I managed to lay down a pretty nice "real" upright vibe and get the others to buy into a rational volume level. No ringing at all today. One of the regulars who I trust told me this was the best he's ever heard our little jazz ensemble sound in there. MY EUB just felt more "acoustic" than I'm used to in that room. So Duke's little cab passed the first test with flying colors.:bassist:

My main takeaway continues to be that the secondary tweeter adds a lot more than one might expect at first blush. This one's a keeper, for sure.

Charlie, have you played an 'acoustic' guitar through your cab yet? I bet it'd be pretty nice.

Nope, but I have a trip to a local luthier's shop on my agenda. He also builds killer [Invalid or Expired Link Removed], mando- cellos, bari guitars, etc.

Just judging from how vocals sound through the cab, should be a slam dunk for any acoustic instrument.

Of course, if you have anything like that you want to try through it, we can make it happen right quick. ;)
