Hmmm.... I thought it was a 4x10 but you know what? You're right! It was the 4x8. My bad!
The reason it seemed like a 410 was, it used four Faital 8PR200's - four of the 16-ohm version wired in parallel. That little woofer has 8.65 mm of excursion, and even taking into account Faital's somewhat optimistic yardstick for x-max, it still moves more air than many well-regarded 10's.
The downfall of the Birdhaus 48 is the cost of those woofers. Retail on four of them is just under eight hundred bucks. While I think the configuration works well, especially for something like jazz where it's really important for everybody to hear what everybody else is doing, I just don't think the bang-for-the-buck is there. I'll have to wait for a less expensive 8" woofer that I like to come along.
What happened to that particular Birdhouse 4 8" cab anyway??

Just so happens a Birdhaus 410 is what I had in mind when I ran the
cabinet shape poll a couple weeks ago... "tall" (first choice in the poll) was the cabinet shape I was thinking about. And it "won" the poll.
But I learned something else from that poll. I learned that bass players who use wide tube amps don't really have much to choose from in the way of wide dispersion cabs. So I gotta do something about that.
I would love to see a 210 TC cab tho....
I would be very curious to see an AK Hathor 1002 (1x10) or Hathor 802 (1x8)...
Right now I don't know of any high-output 10" woofers that really thrill me for electric bass. I do like the recent additions to Eminence's 10" Basslite lineup, but that's only a 150 watt woofer. A 110 or even a 210 with Basslites would be seriously outclassed by the Hathor 1203. The Hathor 1203 was my response to calls to do a 110 cab... the best 10" woofer I could find was the Kappalite 3012LF shoehorned into a tiny box. Yeah.
There are a couple of fairly beefy 8" woofers that I like (the 8PR200 being one of them), but they are so darn expensive that we'd end up with a cab costing as much as the Hathor 1203 if not more, and with only slightly better portability to show for our traded-off SPL capability.
Once the Birdhaus 46 is officially in production, there will be that much less of an "opening" in my lineup for a 1x8 or 110 cab. Not saying it can't happen, and it may well happen some day, but probably not in the near future. "Near" being relative... wish I could move all my ideas along faster (maybe if I didn't stay up until 2:44 in the morning editing posts...)
