AudioKinesis Cabs Part VI...

I need to clear up something.

Back on December 2, 2014, I posted about a "Hathor 1533" with the stock 8-ohm Kappalite 3015 (non-LF) that didn't end up going into production. The two 3" mids were side-by-side, and I think I only made one. I ended up going with the custom 4-ohm Kappalite variant with the upper-mid emphasis that I'm using now, and stacking the mids vertically.

So while you may find references to a Hathor 1533 from way back when, it was quite a bit different from what I'm doing now.

Specs: 25" tall x 18" wide x 14" deep; 36 pounds; "4 or 8 ohms" switchable (via adding a bit of switchable series resistance to what starts out as a "high 4 ohms" woofer); 98 dB in 4 ohm mode (based on the woofer's T/S parameters) and 97 dB in 8 ohm mode; -4 dB at the 62 Hz first overtone of low-B; 12 kHz top end (taking beaming into account... on axis it's 20 kHz); power handling 500 watts. Midrange smoother switch, top-end rolloff switch, and three pluggable ports.

The same basic specs apply to the 1505, except weight = 37 pounds for the 1505 and top end extension = 8 kHz, in return for which we get a more "growly" upper-mid region when the midrange smoother switch is dis-engaged.
 
so . . if anyone has the specs for the tc112v1, tc115v2, the hathor 212 . . . i can put all of them together if people want them.

I'll gather up them together later tonight and get them to you. Thanks!

Sooooo.....The port plugs: What are the configurations for low end roll off? All the ports plugged is least amount of bottom, right? Then is two plugged ports less bottom than one plugged port and so on and so on?

Right! All ports open = biggest bottom end.

The more ports plugged, the higher the low-end rolloff starts, but the more gradual it is. Still the net effect of plugging ports is a reduction of low-end energy. So one or two ports plugged is probably about right for home, all ports open for an outdoor gig, and all ports plugged for that once-a-year uberboomy room gig where nothing seems to work.

If you plug one port, I suggest plugging one of the bottom ones, so that you still have one port a little bit higher than the center of the woofer magnet, and one port a little bit lower, to hopefully get a little bit of chimney-effect cooling.

And how do you switch between 4/8 ohms?

The middle switch on the switch-dish is for changing the impedance, and is labeled "4" for the up position and "8" for the down position. That's the location on the switch-dish that had enough "real estate" available for the label. The upper switch gently rolls off the highs when down, and the lower switch smoothes the upper mids when down. So, UP is LOUDER for all three switches.

TC112v1 (largely from memory): 22'" x 14" x 14", 31 pounds normal, 33 pounds "acoustic friendly", 94 dB, -2 dB @ 62 Hz, 17 kHz top end, 4 ohms, 500 watts. Two pluggable ports, top-end rolloff switch, early examples also had a tweeter killswitch before I figured out that only people who wanted a tweeter anyway were going to pay the price I was charging. Custom 4-ohm version of the Kappalite 3012LF.

TC115v2 (almost entirely from memory - sorry!): 25" x 17" x 14", 37 pounds, 97 dB, -3 dB @ 62 Hz, 18 kHz top end, 8 ohms, 500 watts. Four pluggable ports, top-end rolloff switch and midrange smoother switch (which had very little effect). Stock Kappalite 3015 (non-LF).

Hathor 212: 32" x 14" x 14", 43 pounds, 97 dB, -2 dB @ 62 Hz, 12 kHz top end, 4 ohms, kilowatt capable. Three pluggable ports, top-end rolloff switch, midrange smoother switch. Two stock Kappalite 3012LFs.

You absolutely DO NOT have to do this!!

part of it is trying to figure out the differences i'm hearing in the high end between my tc112v1 and hathor 1203, and how they correlate to the specs given.

I don't think the specs are going to shed a great deal of light on that; the constant-directivity-horn-loaded compression drivers, fairly uniform dispersion through the crossover region, and more complex crossovers of the Thunderchild cabs is just a very different approach from paper cones, medium or small as the case may be, in the "open format" mid-chambers of the Hathor cabs. My top-end rolloff specs try to take beaming into account for the Hathor cabs, so that may be somewhat useful - at least there is some differentiation in my claims for the two types.

I'd forgotten about that! Home audio style inputs were among several "custom" bits and pieces that found their way into a particular cab here and there, for various reasons.

I called it an output because IIRC that's the main way I ever used it, with the tweeter switched off and some goofy DIY top box or other plumbed in for test purposes.

this looks pretty close to what i found on page where you introduced a very sexy looking white tc112v1.

yeah, it does and it doesn't. i saw something you mentioned about pattern matching (i think it was) when discussing the tc112v1.

it does help a bit in terms of what things seems to do.
