AudioKinesis Cabs Part VI...

On my main gig I play 85% electric bass and 15% synth bass with my korg r3 keyboard...

Considering all stated above I find it best with both the 1203's and TC112v1 top switch up bottom switch down. Honestly I also prefer this configuration with my electric bass as well... If I were doing a metal gig or a Rush / Yes type of gig, well then 1203's in full nasty mode is perfect...

So to make a long story long (lol), I really think it depends on the music your covering. But I agree it is great to have options and I'm glad you offer them on your cabs with a flick of a switch.

Thank you for going into so much detail, maisbass. One thing I'm really seeing here is, the switches have definitely helped the Hathor 1203 to better serve its owners.

imo, it's all useful. i was messing around with these a quite a lot the last few days, as i was comparing two amps and using both the tc112v1 and hathor 1203 to do it. one thing that stuck me is that the more pronounced mids on the hathor masks the low end some—that might be why people thought the hathor1533 had more low end.

If anything, I think the 1505 and 1553 have more mids than the 1203, because my 15" woofer contributes more upper-mid bumpage than the 3012LF in the 1203.

i just want to know these things because of my little project . . .

Me too, for my little project . . .

for me, the mids are fine. they hyped are where it's not always useful for me . . .

say hello to my little project.

Delivery of the B 46 is delayed till tomorrow .

Cool! The 46 is deadly in small rooms. I played a boatload of wine bars and restaurants over the past year with the 46 prototype, and it worked well in those places. I lean towards the corpulent side tone wise, and the 46 goes there naturally. It is not a cabinet that mates well with too much dullness in front of it, a lively bass or amp stage before it works best.

Most of my use has been a Barker B1 fretless through a Gallien Krueger MB500. That whole collection works extremely well in the jazz work I have gotten. I run the GK eq'd to be flat, which means I cut the lows and highs and boost the low and high mids.

I did do one low volume country gig where I ran a Sadowsky MV4 with the GK, and the results were great there as well. The room the country gig was in was boomy, I ended up plugging the 46 and running it sealed.

At some point in the not too distant future, I'm going to replace the GK and go for something more refined sounding. I also have been experimenting with pairing the 46 with a fearful 12/6 to provide the umph to let me scale up to handle some bigger rooms my band has started to book.

The 1203 sounds amazing with my PJ especially with a pick switches up. Havent experimented much with the down switch cause that sound works so well in the classics band I am in. But I prefer the TC112 with my Fodera which I suppose is more full range and I am playing quite differently in general. Our guitarist always gets a huge grin when I am pounding eighth notes on the P with a pick through the 1203 (Markbass LMK). When we do bigger casino rigs with both cabs through my pope pre qsc set up the sound is just sublime. I really think I play better when my rig is sounding great as it just makes it easier to concentrate on playing

K-with-a-b your last comment really rang true to me. I definitely play better when I'm Diggin on my tone, which I have been lately. (In spite of not owning an AK YET!) Hopefully I'll be able to join your somewhat exclusive little group of owners club in the not too distant future. I keep following this thread with the thought of getting an AK cab. Sadly every time I think it's near some money sucking gremlin raises its ugly head to Hoover up any spare cash I might have been hoarding for such an expenditure. Then there's the problem of figuring out which one to target. Ah well, I'm here with you all in spirit if not for real yet.

Hey Kirk,
I know you're a big fan of the MiniMega. I am too. I had thought that I would like my new Darkglass head better but I don't. The MiniMega paired with my new AK Hathor 212 is the closest thing I've tried to my big rig, SVT through my Berg NV610, but in a much smaller and lighter package. It sounds huge, like a much bigger rig!

Hathor. 1203s. D800. sounding. so. good.
big fan of the MiniMega.

I'm alternating between these two amps. Usually the subway because its smaller. But each time I use either one I'm like, "Yes, this one is my favorite!" Then I use the other and think the same thing. I likem both.

The Peavey is the only Class D head I've tried that comes close to the authoritative slam of the SVT. I haven't tried all the class d's but I've owned the SVT 7pro, Subway D800 and the new Darkglass head. I've read it has to do with Peavey's own power module compared to the standard Ice module used in all the others. Everything else sounds thin to me. For what I do it's perfect. I play rock, hard rock and alternative grungy stuff.

Hello Trent. If every you get to play a Glockenklang Blue Rock, it will be interesting to see if it feels different to you than the ICE-based amps.

Hey TrentB and Nutdog and Snaxter, it is interesting to hear your takes on these amps. Being a Glock owner (Soul II) I will say that the Blue Rock is on a very short list of new amps I'm interested in, along with the B/amp and a couple of others but finances don't allow that type of investment yet. So I hope (to get back OT) to pick up on an AK cab to add to my cab arsenel, most likely, before I get another amp.

Hello Kirk. As you may know, I am no longer a gigging musician. You'll have to get your reports of real world use from other Blue Rock owners. However, I did comment on the Blue Rock as a Class D amp compared to a Class H amp in a thread here. I don't know what your objective is, but I'd imagine that a 4 ohm Hathor 1505 would sound great driven by your Blue Soul amp. Just sayin'. ;)

Quickly, before I lose the moment:

Playing my newly arrived Hathor 1203 now, adjusting its switches and port, it is more like an instrument in the conventional sense (a music maker or primary tool used by one who makes music) than any other speaker cabinet I can recall playing. At low volume, with a fine Jazz Bass, across playing styles and pickup selection, spontaneously I have this sense of the Hathor 1203. And baby, does it sound good.

In hindsight, if instead my first AudioKinesis cabinet had been the Hathor 1866, it would have been great; and I wouldn't have known the difference. But I'm glad it worked out this way. The scale of the Hathor 1203 is what speaks so well of Duke's ability as a designer. It hints that by being able to get it so right in a package of such small size, he would then be able to do so with designs of any size.

The focus and relevance of the Hathor 1203's voice (voices, really) is inspiring. I can't wait to hear it at higher volumes. Still thawing after delivery, and not yet broken in, nonetheless it handily presented or interpreted (depending on its settings) the wooly and huge depths or scintillating high harmonics and snarl of my beautiful bass guitar and its 1966 pickups. And it reflected to me well that my playing now is far better than it ever was since I first picked up a bass guitar in 1979. The Hathor 1203 did this in about ten minutes' time.

Thank you very much, Duke.

P.S. - Disclosure: I was using a HPF. Also, I could not detect any boxiness, and I found the open midrange chamber to be quite effective.

Seriously, thank you very much. I also appreciate your comment about the lack of boxiness. In my experience small sealed mid-chambers can sound boxy, so the open-format mid-chamber is probably playing a role there.

I really do wish I could offer my cabs at more accessible prices. I've done many many designs "on paper" looking for a way to offer a worthwhile improvement over more affordable (typically non-neodymium) cabs in the more reasonable price ranges, but dangit the stuff I do just doesn't scale down in price very well.
