Well folks, these were definitely worth the wait! Can't wait to get them out of the living room where I can crank 'em up!
When I first plugged in, I was thinking "wow, the bass IS great". Then it occurred to me that I hadn't unplugged the ports. All I can say now is holy crap!

I'll bet that F Bass sounds pretty ridiculous through that setup.

It's a tradeoff to a certain extent. The radiation pattern out in the house is bit wider and more uniform in the vertical plane with the upper cab standing on its head, so yes in that sense it's better, BUT the bass player will definitely be able to hear his overtones better with the tweeter on top rather with a woofer on top. Imo the advantage out in the house of inverting the top cab would be minor, but the advantage to the bass player from having tweeter on top is pretty major... it doesn't sound very good up close with the woofer on top.

You should be able to get awesome, thick, sweet tone from a matching pair of H1203's. I speak from experience.

Just so that I can get a better idea of where the goal posts are, what needs to be different from the voicing of the 1533 with both switches down, and all three ports open?

imho, if you want old school, you may have to have a way to turn off the tweeters or horns.
