AudioKinesis Cabs Part VI...

So my Birdhouse 415 arrived Tuesday. First impression this is a really big cab, much bigger than I expected. And it is not light at ~65 pounds but it handles very well and is relatively easy to carry about. Maybe the low handle placement has something to do with this.

The sound is huge and phat as you might expect from a 415. I haven't had a chance to play it with a band yet to explore the dispersion characteristics and how it handles a lot of power. Currently I am using a bridged Crown XLS 1000 with an Aguilar Tone Hammer as a pre. I have turned up the volume a couple of times and it seems dangerously loud. It literally makes my teeth hurt.

I also played my 6 string and I think this cab does pretty well with a low B, at least at lower volumes. It might break up at higher volumes but I was scared to turn it up too much.

I think this cab will be great for my purposes. I can't wait to play it with a band and hear how it sounds with some juice.

I reeeeeeeaaallllly want to hear a gig report after the B415 makes its debut. And maybe see some attached dental x-rays. Dental x-rays or it didn't happen.

EDIT: That is a nice-looking cab. I like how the front speakers and grilles are surface-mount and the side speakers are recessed...recessed side speakers are probably a really good idea since carrying a box that size through doorways will probably involve a scuff or two at some point.

I will do a report but it might take a while. I’m not sure when this reggae project will start gigging. I think my regular band would freak if I showed up with this beast.

It is a nice looking cab and imposing. It is much deeper than it is wide.

I should probably get a cover made for it to prevent scuffs. Where is a good place to have a cover made?

For awhile in my guitar gigging years, I used a mint-condition open-back Fender 4 x 12 that I got used from the print classifieds (remember those? no?) and it came with a really nice custom cover. The previous owner had it made by an auto upholsterer, out of heavy-duty black seat vinyl, like what you'd see on an old pickup's bench seat. It had edge-stitched rectangular holes in each side that lined up with the cab's cast metal recessed handles. Slipped right on and was just snug enough, and it was easy to carry. Don't remember if I ever asked the seller how much the cover cost, but if you have some auto upholsterers in your area it couldn't hurt to ask.

That's what I was thinking! You'd be hard pressed to find a 215 at that weight! We've gotten so spoiled so fast. I probably played for 30 years before getting my first cab that was less than 100lbs :)
