AudioKinesis Cabs Part VI...

I don't have plans to do a "conventional" bass cab with the drivers on a recessed flat baffle behind a big full-face metal grille. Nor do I want to do a new design with four layers of plywood for the front baffle in order to flush-mount the woofer & round grille (yes, it took four layers of plywood to flush-mount those side-firing woofers on the Birdhaus 415).

That being said, I must admit that your request is perfectly reasonable.

So, what do you think of this: Perhaps I could add a wooden"lip" around the perimeter of the front baffle of an existing design, deep and thick enough so that the round woofer grille is effectively recessed a little bit?

How about just adding a removable front lid? It could have the lip instead and the cab would still be just like any of your current ones in stage mode.

So the "lid" is just for protection during transportation, and then you take it off when you go to play?

Zigactly. Just like a rack or road case front lid, really. I don't see it as necessarily needing to be very heavy at all though.

And if you did it right there could maybe be room for cable or chart storage, or it could fold into a tiltback stand, or probably any number of other useful utilities. I figure that you'd come up with something out of the box.

How about a double padded cover ? Since it's for transportation, it should work fine. Or a cover that is only double thick in the front?

I've looked at just cutting a piece of denser foam to fit inside my existing Tuki cover, with a partial recess for the woofer to nest into. I think Studio Slips has a hard plastic insert option too.

Well this is probably a longer answer than you wanted...

There are, in effect, two different mechanisms that limit what a woofer can do, namely "mechanical limitations" and "thermal limitations".

Mechanical limitations are related to how far the cone moves. If the voice coil moves far enough that it starts to go outside the magnetic gap, distortion starts to rise rapidly. At the same time, the suspension system (surround and spider) become less and less linear with these long excursions. At some point, either the voice coil moves so far beyond the magnetic gap that it causes audible distortion, OR the suspension system is stretched to the point that it causes audible distortion. The point at which the cone's excursion exceeds this threshold, whether due to voice coil or suspension system limitations, is called "x-max". Ideally it is measured, but often it is simply calculated, and sometimes a rather optimistic formula is used for the calculation.

As a real-world example of this, the Kappalite 3015LF's x-max is 9.6 mm, which is the point where the voice coil's excursion beyond the magnetic gap causes excessive distortion. The Kappalite 3012LF has exactly the same voice coil length and exactly the same magnetic gap height as its 15" sibling, but its x-max is only 9.1 mm! The reason is, the limiting factor for the 3012LF is the suspension system - the surround goes non-linear before the voice coil does. The actual distortion measurements reveal this (or so said the engineer who designed those woofers and did the measurements).

If we push the woofer all the way to "x-damage", well that's not good. We've either slapped the voice coil against the backplate or stretched the suspension system to its maximum. The woofer may have survived, but we have probably shortened its life expectancy significantly. The old adage "That which doesn't kill you makes you stronger" does not apply to woofers!

Okay, now let's look at the thermal side of things. First a bit of background: Woofer motors are extremely inefficient devices - out of every hundred watts that goes into a woofer, maybe 2 watts are converted into sound if we are lucky, and the other 98 watts are converted into heat. So a 500-watt peak is like hitting the voice coil with a 490 watt soldering iron! It gets hot, and it gets hot fast. And before it has a chance to cool down, along comes a bunch more wattage which gets converted into heat. The voice coil's heat is spread to the motor (magnet and other metal parts) and the air. If the voice coil gets too hot, the glue that holds it together softens a bit, and the physical stresses it's under cause it to go slightly out-of-round. So you might make it through the gig, but then the next day you notice that the voice coil sounds scratchy when you play the speaker or push gently on the cone. Or even if you never quite push the woofer to the point where you melt the glue, you are still putting a lot of "miles" on it when you push it very hard for a long time.

But long before the voice coil overheats, "thermal compression" is happening. As the voice coil heats up, its resistance increases. So it takes more wattage input to get it to play at a given level, which in turn causes it to heat up more, which in turn... yeah, it's a vicious cycle. At the same time the same thing is happening to the magnet - as it gets hotter, it loses strength (temporarily), which means that the woofer loses efficiency, so you need to put more wattage into it to reach the same SPL, which in turn heats everything up even more... I've simplified things a bit but basically that is what happens. So you keep feeling the need to turn up more and more, and it SEEMS like your amp is crapping out. By the end of the set the amp is turned way up and everything sound mushy and lacks clarity and impact, and you tell yourself that you need a more powerful amp. But then after the break (which gave the motor a chance to cool off so the magnetic strength returned), you come back and by golly it sounds fine again! The solution would be to bring more cab(s), and not necessarily more amp, to the next such gig. (The other solution would be to have everybody turn down and keep it turned down, but that's probably not going to happen.)

To recap, the woofer can get into trouble from too much excursion or too much wattage. The ONLY built-in safety mechanism I can think of is, the woofer warns you that it's unhappy by starting to sound bad. Fartout is a sign that you're exceeding x-max, and thermal compression (mushiness/loss of clarity/loss of impact) is a sign that you're starting to cook your woofer. Now for the bad news... these Kappalite-class "uberwoofers" usually have such long x-max that they probably won't fartout before the voice coil melts! So you gotta pay closer attention with your ears, and be willing to turn down as soon as you start to hear obvious thermal compression.

So now let's look at your question: "Is a speaker such as a 3015 nonLF used is a generic commercial cab able to be designed to LIMIT it own output due to some design implementation?"

If I was given the job of "design a cab for the 3015 nonLF that will protect it by limiting its output", here are the things I'd think about: A sealed box will make it very difficult to drive the woofer to x-damage, but a ported box allows better heat-exchange with the outside world due to air circulation. I think heat is more likely than overexcursion to kill this woofer as long as the cab is well designed, so I'd opt for a ported box. Maybe even put one port higher than the magnet and one port lower than the magnet in order to get a bit of "chimney effect" cooling... but none of this REALLY protects the woofer.

Since protecting the woofer is the top priority in this hypothetical, and assuming we're limited to cab design (and I can't cheat and put a $200 Eminence D-Fend unit in the cab programmed to electronically protect the woofer), I'd use deliberately inadequate ports. I'd use ports that are going to chuff and thereby tell you to "turn down" hopefully before the woofer starts to take damage, but hopefully not so early in the game that the cab becomes unusable.

Well that turned out to be a much longer and more complicated post than I'd planned on.

This should be "stickified" and required reading for "Speaker 101". Nice, Duke!!!
 
I haven't posted in a while, but a few months ago I took delivery of the prototype Changeling 15. I have to say, it is one very impressive feat of engineering. I'm running every switch in the up position and all ports open. Honestly, friends, I have never heard myself so well on stage. My band always uses sound reinforcement, but the stage volume is still very loud due to a thundering drummer and a guitarist with a Les Paul and a Bogner. With my prior cabinets (Epifani, Markbass and especially Greenboy), in order to hear myself, my stage volume had to be so high that the singers and the sound man were constantly complaining. And, even worse, there was an awful, low-end, boom problem that I had at one of the principal venues where I play - even when I put my cabinet on an isolator pad. With the Changeling, I hear myself perfectly, there is zero boom, my stage volume is much lower than it has ever been, and the sound man and singers are delighted. It is amazing how well the bass tone slots in with the kick drum and the electric guitar. Everyone - especially me - hears me clearly.

My experience with Duke has been excellent. He listened to my issues, and worked with me to find a solution that was well-suited to my needs. We were going to go with a Changeling 12, but since neither weight nor portability are issues for me, and I wanted the option to use the speaker as a stand alone cabinet when sound reinforcement was unavailable, we decided to go for a Changeling 15. The bedroom tone is pretty good, but the cabinet absolutely SHINES in a band situation; especially when there is an electric guitarist. It is excellent for the danceable and classic rock and roll that I'm playing. Seriously, you have to hear this thing. It has a fullness and an airiness that I have never heard before, has more than enough bottom for a significant majority of players, can get silly loud, and has zero boom. If for some reason your stage is boomy, just plug a port or two. Brilliant!

For reference, I'm playing a variety of four, five, and six string vintage Fender and Fodera basses, through either a Glockenklang BlueSoul or a Glockenklang BassArt Preamp/QSC power amp combination. The sound is fantastic.

What is the Changeling 15? I must have missed it this summer. Does anyone have photos. Is it similar to the TC115 or Hathor. I don't recall seeing it on teh AK site

Is this using the 5" mid or the dual 3" mids?
 
The cabinet is the same size as the Hathor 1533, but it has dual 3" mids in the front and the back, and has three sealable ports. It has three switches: the first gently rolls of the highs above 3.5k, the second reduces the volume of the rear firing drivers by -7db, and the third removes the zig-zag feature and smooths out the mids. I think the weight is about 35 pounds or so. It has a top handle and side handles. I don't know if Duke planned on offering this as a production item. Mine is a prototype and was built to meet a particular need. I am extremely happy with my Changeling. I see why so many players have embraced this brand.
 
mmm .. I don't think i need rear firing drivers.. Many of next years gigs the back wall may be 20 to 30 feet away from the cab..
But local gig it may be handy.. Ive never experienced rear firing drivers .. Just don't know if it would make a noticeable enough difference for my gigs. But i did admit Ive never experienced rear firing drivers .. Might be very handy

Your amp may or may not be able to replicate things (depending on the eq points). Mostly it just makes for a couple of different cabinets in one box with just the flip of a switch. I usually reserve eq on the amp for fixing a weird room or for an effect/particular tone.

My sense is that the flexibility Duke provides to re-voice the cabs with switches and reconfigurable ports is much more significant than you could get with the EQ on most any amps I'm familiar with. Most cabs offer a chance to adjust the high end driver balance, but that's about it.

One of the unique aspects of Duke's design approach is to give the user a type of control over the cab that most of us are not accustomed to having. I'm looking forward to trying this out first hand at some point in the near future. I think the opportunity to adjust tone/voicing with both the amp's controls and features on the cabinet will have both utility (e.g. adjusting for difficult rooms) and musical value (e.g. creative tone shaping).

My recollection is that the weight was closer to 40 pounds, but I can't find a record of that. I'll be able to double-check in a couple of days.

Duke, not sure if you want to divulge the info.... but where does your custom 15 driver land in Vd compared to the stock 3015 kappalites?

X-max is probably slightly greater than the stock 3015 (non-LF)... I don't have the actual Klippel distortion measurements so I can't say for sure. My voice coil overhang is a little bit greater. I suppose my suspension system could be the limiting factor, but Eminence installed the deeper donut-shaped backplate on mine (same as on the 3015LF), which implies that my x-damage is greater, so I'm guessing that my suspension system has pretty good linear excursion.

The midrange "smoothy/grindy" switch lets you quickly toggle between two hopefully useful voicings. Aside from the obvious, the top-end rolloff switch better protects the tweeter, and hopefully makes the cab more distortion/overdrive-friendly.

I'm pretty sure you could accomplish the same thing with EQ. And there is no reason why you can't use both... either of the midrange voicings could conceivably be a reasonable starting point for your own EQ recipe, freeing up your EQ bands to do other stuff.

I've had several bass players tell me that they prefer "smooth" for practice at home, and "grindy" for rehearsals and gigs. Some use "smooth" for double-bass and "grindy" for electric bass. Some bass players have a definite preference for one setting or the other, and simply set it and forget it. Again all of this can be accomplished with EQ, but I'm under the impression that bass cabs compete tonally against one another primarily on how they sound "right out of the box", and not so much how they sound "after EQ" (although "takes EQ well" is always good news). Theoretically the switch lets me compete in more arenas than a single fixed voicing would.
