AudioKinesis Cabs Part VI...

Do this. Someone recently pm'd me about AK and was considering phil jones and asked me about it. I've only encountered one PJ in the wild and it left me underwhelmed and mathmatically I don't see how a 4x5 can compete with a 3012lf even if they have the same xmax, which is doubtful. We discussed the pros and cons but we looked at the AK user map and found something nearby for him to sample. After the meet, order placed.

PM sent.

I hear you about PJB. The irony is, when I bought my current rig I was gigging almost only on upright, with a quiet drummer and a keyboardist / vocalist. The fact that it sounded good with electric bass too was a "nice to have" but not the main deciding factor. I honestly didn't think I'd play in loud bands again.

A few years later, I'm almost only gigging on electric bass (I think I haven't taken my upright out in 2 years), with a loud band.

*sigh*

We can never win the war on GAS, can we?

EDIT: Forgot to say...I have yet to find something that sounds as good for my upright as the PJB rig: It sounds great, that's definitely not the issue. There is (IMO) a bit of snake-oil salesmanship in some of their claims about loudness, though.

That 12" loaded supercab is totally a 410 eqivilant; it's loud as heck, blah blah.

I've had a whole series of 12" supercabs; and there ain't a one of them that I'd use on its own for more than a leaning towards quiet medium sized gig.
Y'all can think what you want and use what you want, and that's just my opinion etc.

I like them, I use them, but I still think people saying a 112 cab is 410 equivilant and a 115 cab is an 810 equivilant hear things differently than I do.

Having said all that, there's pretty not much I gig I do anymore that I can't cover easily with two high end 112's.

I don't think my 1203 is a 410 equivalent, but I do think it'll match many 210 or 115 cabs. For me, the main advantage of a pair of 12s over a single 12 is height. If I angle a 12 upwards, or use a cab like the 1203 that has those funky mid ports barking up at me, or put a good 12 on a stand, I'm fine.

I agree about the comparisons and have said so many times.

Two 1203's can do any gig my trace 210/115 stack that I used for 13 years could do only better. IIRC both together weigh less than one of the trace cabs. For it's time the trace stack was pretty portable and one of the reasons I selected it.

For most of my needs 1 is fine and there's still plenty left in the tank. I agree a good 410 would beat it in volume but I don't need it and definitely don't want to transport it. I don't play really loud music. I did, at ear damaging levels for about 2 years with some really loud people, and two hathors acquitted themselves quite well.

I do think the AudioKinesis C112T I played was equal to many 212's I've played in terms of usefulness for on stage monitoring (projection, tone, and volume). According the FOH engineer who heard me use that cab as well as some 212's and 112/115 and 112/112 combinations in the past, he felt the C112T sounded as good in the house as my typical rigs. While not death metal, we had two electric guitars and a rock drummer in addition to my bass in the mix and it was a medium to larger venue. I did have minimal FOH support with all the cabs, but my cab was producing usable tone for the audience.

No way it was a 410 equivalent, but it could hold its own against many 212's IMO. There is no single 15" loaded bass cab I've ever heard that could stand up against an 810 or even many of the better 410s.

And I really appreciated the advice, Nutdog. :thumbsup:.

A single H1203 will not get as loud as most 4-10 cabs, but the sound out of it will be significantly better IME. A lot of 4-10 cabs I get in backlines sound like constipated duck farts.

NYE I had the CT1203/H1203 pair and the Forte wasn't even breathing hard - plenty of booty for a 10 piece band with two loud guitar players. Way easier to schlep than a 4-10 as well.

And yes, CDF *is* playing Coachella this year.

i'm always interested in how loud people play. seems to me more stage volume just creates problems—especially if you have live mics for vocals or acoustic instruments.
Everywhere we played everyone was playing soooooo loud. I always have earplugs for my day job and would always wear them. The funny thing was the whole mix sounded so much better with the earplugs. You could tell what everyone was playing. Without them it was just a cacophony of reverberating brain piercing pandemonium. I showed this to the band and said this is what I'd like the mix to sound like without earplugs. They agreed it was better but never changed.

Generalities; gratitude phase:
Converse to what I was saying before;
Man, I'm grateful for guys like Duke and the whole "supercabs/superdrivers" thing.

I don't mind at all taking a 112 where I used to take a 212 or whatever;
and,
taking two of them where I used to haul 150+lbs of stuff;
and;
No longer having to have compleeeeetely different gear for electric vs double bass gigs,
Aaaaaand;
Having it all sound soooooo much better.

So, Bass Gear Magazine will be officially reviewing a pair of the new Changeling 112T's! :bassist: :bassist: :bassist: :thumbsup: :hyper:

I had one of them in my hands (briefly) before sending it off to a certain other TBer who will be handling the in-hand review. This did give me a chance to quickly compare it to one of my Hathor 1203's. The Changeling 12T definitely goes deeper and has more deep low content, but I did find that when I went back to the Hathor, it still felt super full on a low B. So while the Changeling 12T (and presumably Hathor 1203T) definitely do offer up more deep low content, the regular 1203 doesn't really sound like it's lacking anything. I also felt like the Changeling 12T had just a slight bit more high end clarity and articulation (likely from reflections from that rear-firing mid/tweet). Once again, the 1203 didn't necessarily feel diminished in any way when I went back to it. All in all, the Changeling seems to have an extended frequency response, both low and high, and the 1203 comes across as a bit more warm-sounding. The two of them did play very nicely together (though I'd have to swap out some of the corners if I wanted to stack them on a regular basis).

Of course, no pics, no Changeling!
