AudioKinesis Cabs Part VI...

Does anyone use a Thunderchild as a cabinet for an electronic drum kit? I've been using my Traynor SB112 with it and it's working out well but I'm jonesing for a new cabinet, one that could work with my bass and the drums as well. If so, which of the Thunderchildren do you think would be best suited for a Roland TD-11?

I would want to be sure the cab goes low enough to do justice to the fundamental of your kickdrum. My impression is that the fundamental is in the 50 Hz ballpark, which would call for a larger internal volume than what I normally use. Not saying the Thunderchild wouldn't "work", but imo the goal posts for electronic kickdrum are in a different place.

That being said, I'd want to do a more thorough investigation of where that fundamental really is, because I may be wrong.

I think the NAMM cab with the top firing secondary tweeter and the heavier duty compression driver would be fab for that.

Agree with Passinwind that the NAMM cab configuration with the up-firing tweet would be the best bet for electronic drums. The output of the upfiring tweet would splash off the bottom of your amp, which would be elevated a bit by four rubber feet on the top of the cab.

I had planned to offer that cab for electric piano but it looks like Eminence has discontinued the 4-ohm version of their Kappalite 3012LF woofer, so I'll have to re-do the crossover for the 8-ohm version, whose response curve is significantly different (well, "significantly" for this sort of application).

On a different note, somebody texted me late last week asking for specs on a first-generation Thunderchild 112 (if I recall correctly). I fumbled the buttons on my phone and deleted the text before I could call back (old flip-phone, I can talk way faster than I can text). So whoever that was, please try again!

Currently saving for a pair Thunderchild ! If I'm too slow to raise the funds to order them before the
end of production of the TC112 4 ohm, I guess I'll have to buy TC115s ! Nice problem ;)
If you miss it, let me know. I have a 4 ohm TC112 version 1 that has been babied and taken care of, and I'm eyeing the Changelings. ;)

Six gigs in the next three days, starting with a corporate event tomorrow, going through a parade, house parties, a couple of bars, and a tent festival. I’m leaving my old cab at home (it’s sitting on top of it) and taking this exclusively. BRB
 
My gut says you won’t be disappointed. I’d very much like to hear the gig reports. When I was living and gigging furiously in the Bay Area I was a freelancer that did a huge variety of jobs that could vary from trio Jazz with upright, AEB flute duos to funk or rock gigs at volume with a different group nightly. Sounds you might be doing something similar, that is, if these aren’t all with the same group/music.

They used to call it "tethering". Basically it's the technique of using a cellphone as a modem, so that other devices (such as a personal computer) can connect to internet via the phone's connection.

I started out investigating satellite service but now tethering is the front-runner.

Found out that my cell phone provider's signal is too weak in my area to support tethering, that's what they tell me anyway, so I'm investigating other companies.

My current theory is that the unstable Texas clay my house is resting on results in enough shifting that roof-mounted radio antennas go out of alignment with changes in the weather. When it's dry, we get huge cracks in the ground. When it's wet, like a few weeks ago, the house shifts enough that one of my doors gets stuck, I mean really stuck. It's finally dry enough now that the door opens again.

If my theory is correct, the satellite thing is probably not feasible, because the target is so far away that susceptibility to expansion and contraction of the ground itself would be magnified. Unfortunately the satellite service providers won't let me talk to an installer about the situation before signing a two-year contract.

Sorry for the off-topic ramble, but I thank you for your ideas and encouragement and support, and I'm working on getting it sorted out. Sometimes I have connection, like now, but the past few weeks that's definitely been the exception.

You may want to consider having a small stable tower built outside your house to hold the antenna. The civil engineering and subsequent construction to go deep and hit something stable would be far easier with an antenna tower pad than trying to stabilize an entire house. Just a thought.
 
MAny of my neighbors in McKinney have Satellite. I think they like it.. Boy are you correct about the ground. Its Clay and it shifts a lot!
Years ago i have ATT DSL.. It was always going out. But they always gave me a refund when i called and complained.
We now have Spectrum Cable .. Lucky so far.. My speed is a consistent 100 Mbps down and about 8 mbps UP..
Spectrum was Time Warner Cable and may have joined with Charter... Charter was TERRIBLE when i had it in Denton.
The Best I had was Verizon FIOS... But there is no fiber in this neighborhood.

We had Hughes Net when I lived in Tom Bean/White right area. We had to mount our dish on a pole on a hill next to the house to get the right angle over the trees around the house, so they can put it in other areas. My step brother, who lived in Princeton, only ever had service with Verizon. That whole area is so spotty, though, you can have two carriers phones side by side and one will have service and the other wont. Then, walk 20 feet away and they will flip. At least that is how it was 10 years ago ( if it is like most things in rural Texas, it probably hasn't changed much).

My cabin in northern Arizona had that exact same issue. We solved it by water-proofing the ground in a 12' perimeter all the way around the house. The concrete option was way too expensive, so we ended up getting a couple truck loads of Dirty Cinders delivered. (It's just a fairly inexpensive mix of small pebbles and dirt with a very high clay-content, available from most any rock & soil dealer)

Then I rented a bobcat to deeply distribute it directly against the houses stem wall, then created a gentle downward slope of the material leading away from the house. Your local rock and soil shop might have a different name for it, but this type of material becomes waterproof after its packed in. This type of material is commonly used for road building, before pavement is added on top. Whole job cost me under a grand...

Good rain gutters with waterproofed channels to carry the water away helped too.

Thanks for the great cab Duke! Rocked it at a St. Patrick’s Day gig yesterday. Many compliments on the great bottom end and tone. Had the band members wondering what I did when I brought it in, but they were believers when I began to rattle the room. Definitely worth every penny!
