AudioKinesis Cabs Part VI...

I haven't played the Birdhaus cabs, but I dig their proposed mission of a more enveloping, omnidirectional presentation.

What were you considering doing with multiples of those cabs? Stacking is the obvious thing, but not very "out of the box". Stereo effects? Three-channel (!) something or other? Something else?
With 3 Birdhaus, you could stack 2 where 1 is flipped to keep the side-firing drivers closer together, the 3rd cab, you could either stack it on top the other 2, firing in any of 4 directions, or lay the 3rd cab on its back positioned behind the 2 stacked cabs - two drivers firing up & the side drives firing to the sides with all 4 drivers getting more floor coupling.

Interesting. I can't offer you much insight into how this would work in practice, but perhaps Duke would have some ideas (or at least be better able to elucidate some of the considerations in implementing something like that).

What would be the purpose of this kind of mulit-cab set-up? Legit question, not knocking the inquiry.

Any time you have more than one source there is the potential for interference - reinforcement or cancellation at certain frequencies. Since the Birdhaus's (Birdhauses? Birdhomes? What's the correct plural term?) have sound exiting from three sides I'd guess there is potential for interference in unpredictable ways.

Presumably all of the woofers in the BH sum in the forward direction despite facing 3 different directions. What happens two cabs are placed next to each other, a couple feet apart as in a "stereo" setup:
  • Do the woofers on the adjacent most sides interfere with each other in a positive or negative way?
  • How does the horizontal dispersion (across the stage right and left) get affected?
  • Do all the woofers still sum in the 'forward' direction? Two cabs will create a bit of a power alley, so this summation can vary by distance.
  • What frequencies are canceled out - lows, mids highs?
Can't answer these questions without getting a few cabs together and doing a lot of experimentation, and probably a bunch of measurements.

Exactly now, I’m listening to John Guinty. B3 and a Leslie. Duke should come up with a spinny speaker for bass..:smug:

Here you go, plop your cab down on this bad boy. Just need a roadie on stage to spin it. :D

Would the plural form be Birdhausen?

I'll be interested to read about any multi-Birdhausen configurations if anyone chimes in on this. Here's my input;

My experiments using my Birdhaus 48 with a power amp, as a slave, in combination with a 1 x 15 combo, were abortive.

I wanted to further amplify the dirty, compressed tone of a cranked Peavey TKO combo, which sounds cool with a P-bass with flatwound strings but is barely loud enough at 80 watts. I figured I could try using the B48 and my 210-watt power amp to add volume and sound dispersal, but what I found was that the B48's frequency response went so much higher that the EQ settings that sounded good cranked through the Scorpion 15 were tooth-shatteringly bright through the four Faital 8s. My main research findings in that experiment were "Yuck."

The cheater-disabling made it easier to attain the sound I liked with the Peavey, using the much-easier-to-carry Zoom preamp I have. So I've been distracted from continuing my experiment by convenience. I may resume at some point, but it's since occurred to me that a lot of what I like about the cranked TKO amp is the sound of its DDT limiter circuit kicking in at high volumes...and maybe the behavior of the Scorpion 15 itself when pushed. It provides a "bounce" to the attack that feels like the power tube compression effect of cranking through a tube guitar amp. But the DDT acts on the power amp, downstream from the TKO's preamp out jack. So that effect will not be passed on to the slave, unless I mic it and amplify that...and that's getting too ridiculous even for me. So my incentive to try this has diminished somewhat.

I think having multiples of smaller drivers gives the presentation of your sound a different flavor - think Phil Jones w/ his 5" or 7" multi-driver Cabs or the old SWR Henry 8x8.

Took this rig out to the gig last night. My new D800+ sounded great with the 212!

I just had you rig's little brother (C12T and D-800) on a four hour gig Thursday night (with a little FOH support using the head's DI) and the sound was great. Your set-up looks really nice and I'll bet sounds killer!!

Yes it does. I think the Mesa amps are a great match for AK cabs.
...and so are the GK MB heads IME. I really like my MB800 with my C12T. While I've not tried the combination, my experience with playing the Aguilar AG700 and Beragntino Forte make me think they would be be equally pleasing.

Come to think of it I may be detecting a pattern relative to Duke's cabs and high quality heads...:woot:
