AudioKinesis Cabs Part VI...

I had the same experience with the streamliner as well. It is a big fat powerful micro, but I had a hard time getting the right mid definition out of it. What I wound up doing was use it strictly as a power amp for my Read preamp. That combination actually worked quite well and I got some great tones out of it, and honestly would have had no problem staying with that setup.

Then I discovered the Puma 900, and sold the streamliner. Then I discovered Monique, and it was game over for me.

Thud, one thing to be aware of - the screws that hold the grille tabs in place are threaded into hurricane nuts (T-nut relatives) that are installed from the inside of the front baffle. So too much downward pressure with the screwdriver can push them out... not a disaster, but definitely a PITA. Fortunately you will need little or no downward pressure to keep the screwdriver engaged with the screw, but if you weren't aware you might inadvertently overdo.

Also, I strongly suggest not using an electric screwdriver, because you need to be able to feel if the screw is starting to bind. You don't want to spin the hurricane nut (again, PITA rather than outright disaster). If it starts to bind, back the screw out, hit it with a little WD-40, and have another careful go. I've never actually had that happen on a grille tab screw, but mention it just in case.

As for amps, I've been using my long-time Shuttle 3.0 and MB800, depending on the size of the gig. Both sound absolutely great with electric, DB, guitar, keyboard, vocals, mp3s... everything. I do wish I had a good micro amp with compressor and more EQ, though. These amps get me 90% of where I want to be with some knob twisting. I guess I'm just always looking for a bit more tweakability. On occasion I have run certain EQ knobs to their extremes. Of course... not the cab's fault. I just have to remind myself at a live gig that it aint a studio recording, and my bass doesn't have to sound perfect... :thumbsup:

The testing continues. I'll have a TC112-8 in hand early next week, will gig it on Wed (assuming I can put together a band - musicians...). Looking forward to comparing it directly to the H1203, and when steubig gets back, to the early TC112-4.

Last night the single H1203 carried the room. Actually plenty of low end and in fact the keyboard player asked me to back off the lows just a hair. I was running both Monique and my YYD dead flat. Typically I would be adding in some low at either end but none needed.

Actually he's fairly well trained in that regard - because I trained him ;) . I was one of the first bass players he gigged with and to his credit he has be open to critique over the past few years. The only thing I haven't been able to move him on is sometimes being a bit long winded and taking too many choruses. But he shares that trait with a lot of people I've played with over the years.

Just got my Barefaced Super Compact in. Any SoCal peeps with a 1203 wanna run a little A/B comparison for giggles? I think the Midget would be a better match up, but I only got what I got :)

Two projects back, we had a "sometimes" keyboard player. She stomped all over the lows and I had to honk up the mids to and thin the lows when she was there. Without her, it was scoop time. The Mesa M6 voicing switch made that change quick and easy.

Yeah We called it BROADWAY piano... you know the ones.. They Play lefty bass while filling in chords at times and also add in the singers melody line too.. hahha
For many, its bad habit that they acquired along the way to stardom... :) Others thinks it sounds OK..:eek::eyebrow::) Then the third batch that doesn't do that seem to work all the time:hyper::bassist:

It wasn't so much her key lines as the tone of her rig. It was huge down low and fought me for space. She wasn't busy, but certain patches were a mess, and she never figured out how to EQ it.

That would be interesting. Weight-wise the two are in the same ballpark, with the Barefaced a bit lighter despite its considerably greater internal volume. Kudos to Alex there. Up front I concede the Super Compact has my cab beat in SPL-to-weight ratio, but mine should be able to compete in one or two other areas (due to its two-way format if nothing else). My guess is that one will do some things better, and the other will do other things better. BUT...

Boy---I'd love to see/hear a comparison between the two cabs! I'm more of a novice at speaker design and have been pretty patiently tutored by Duke. And I've learned something valuable by nearly every post of Alex's---one of the smartest speaker guys around.

I gotta admit--I'm really jealous of the fact that Alex is using what appears-at least to me---a pretty incredible custom driver. I have to be honest---I've been trying to figure out what it was. In the picture I thought for sure that it was from Eminence, but now I doubt it. I looked at the specs and the Super Compact has a frequency response of 37hz to 4000hz. Couldn't be an Eminence because the 3012lf (or anything using that basket)couldn't go nearly that low in that size box. Nowhere close. And he's getting a Vd of 550cc's. The 3012lf is only 496 .And 4k is pretty astounding. Man---I wish I could buy some from him!

No pressure, but I'd love to hear Nostatic's opinion of a comparison between the two!

The 3012lf is 'only' 496cc? That's pretty good by comparison to the Deltalite II, Faital 12PR300, etc.

How much difference does 50cc of Vd make? I'd like to know.

FYI, I did try out a BF Big Baby 2 and it was stupendously loud and even. Light too. A real feat of engineering. It did seem a little bass shy to me but at that time I was coming from an Acme; I may not have let the woofer settle in enough though I did use it for about a month. I'm not sure what the tuning of Alex's BB2 is though he does refer on his website to no longer trying to 'pump out useless lows'.

The BB2 is a little bigger in size than the TC112. That does make a difference to me in small cramped pubs around here.

I have plumped for Duke's TC112AF v2 to see if the midrange can get a *little* more voiced in his iteration of a 2 way 'studio monitor like' cab. I also like that the horn pattern means I can lay the cab in either orientation and have it work well - not something I could do with the BB2 due to the horn pattern. This property can be useful in tight space situations.

While I'm guessing that the following question has already been asked and answered, if so I surely can't find it:

Duke, what is the tonal difference, if any, between a Hathor 1203 and a TC112-8 with the "grindy" switch engaged? Or do I have that backward, and it is now only the Hathor series that has the smooth/grindy option? :unsure:

No---the Kappalite 3012lf is the king (or previous king) of xmax --which yields vd. I looked at the specs of Alex's driver and was on a quest to find out who made it--the specs are fantastic! The basket looked kindof like an Eminence Kappalite, but the Kappalite basket couldn't accommodate a longer voice coil which could yield the bigger Vd. So it would likely be a European manufacturer. But none of Faitals, B&C's or 18Sounds were even close.

But I guess it's not fair to ask Alex to give away trade secrets!

I live to serve. Monsterthompson, where in LA are you? I'm out on the westside. I could possibly do something late afternoon/early evening out here. I'm trying to avoid hauling gear as much as possible as I'm rehabbing a herniated disc.
