Double Bass AudioKinesis Thunderchild 112 cab

Thank's Jeremy for your input.

From what I've red in Talkbass, my feeling was that the Thunderchild, because of his horn, is one of the best cab … for doublers, and one of the loudest (level) cab in the market,

Alain,
While it is the best Doubling cabinet I've ever owned, I'm primarily a Double Bassist, so most of the engagements I play are concerts and it's just exceptional with a Double Bass. I'm going to play a concert next week and I will use the TC 112 for a bowed solo, with piano accompaniment.

whitch is what I'm searching: Loud (level) and Light. I want to travel light, I have no car and use the bus.

Due to it's taller footprint, this might be tricky to do, but the weight of the standard TC 112AF and the Wizzy 12 M Line are the same. Here's a comparison of the specs.
As much as I love the TC 112, it might be unwieldy getting it through the doors, and on and off the bus. Especially, if you're transporting a Double Bass at the same time.

Wizzy M Line 15.6"W x 19.0"H x 12.5"D

Thunderchild 112AF 14" W 22" H x 14" W x 14" D

Crazy 88 20.5" H x 10.5"W x 13.25"D

I'm not doubling, and Soon I need to buy a cab for my large venue gigs. For the moment my setup is a Wizzy 10 … and I'm waiting for Mike Arnopol 'S Crazy 8 for my Coffe Gigs. It will replace my Wizzy 10.

Nice cabinet

For my "Loud" gigs, I was thinking of a Wizzy M Line, or the new double crazy 88 … or the Thunderchild. I want to stay at a 30,35 lbs cab (appprox). And from what I've red in Talkbass, I thought that the thunderchild feets more for doublers.

Well, in deference to Mike I haven't heard the Crazy 88, but Mike owns a TC 112 and loves it. As I noted above the TC 112 is a spectacular DB cabinet. IMHO

Does anyone compare the Wizzy M Line and the Thunderchild?

The Thunderchild is a better cabinet for doublers than is the Wizzy M line, and is a better "one cabinet solution" as long as you have sufficient power with which to drive it (500 watts).

The Wizzy 12M is one of the all-time great cabinets, though; it is more "normal" sounding than the TC112, and perhaps sounds more like a typical bass guitar cabinet in the sense that the midrange presence is awkward for the double bass (in comparison to the TC112--the Wizzy 12M is much better in this sense than most "regular" 1x12 cabinets). But I didn't have luck using just one Wizzy 12 for my louder situations; the TC112, on the other hand, excels at this.

I wouldn't be too interested in commuting on a bus with a double bass and either a Wizzy 12 or a TC 112; they're not THAT small. In my subway days, I had something more the size of a Wizzy 10 for those situations.

Ric

If you use the TC 112 with a bow, that cab should feets perfectly for a Double bass. This is a good test.

I should have mentioned that in case of I use a 30 lbs cab, I will get a friend car, a taxi or whatever cause you're right, too much in a bus with a double bass in the other hand.

And I will keep an eye in the futur to the Crazy 88.

Thank's Ric

I use an old 600W Focus SA

this is what I need. A one cab solution that could feets all my needs for loud situations.
My Wizzy 10 and Crazy 8 will do the job for small and medium venues.

Thank's

I recently took my TC112AF down to let Phil Maneri (Uncletoad) give it a try, and it sounded amazing - bowed or plucked - with his old European upright. It also worked great with his '69 Jazz.

I think I may have made another Thunderchild Convert... :ninja:

Yea. that cabinet is bad ass. It's the first cab that I suspect will make me retire the VL208's.

I plugged the Queen into it with a full circle and the headway into the power section of the Focus 2RIII bypassing the preamp and it was a good an amplified bass sound as I've ever heard. Arco, Pizz, you name it. Stunning. Plugged the fender into the other input and it sounded great too. Perfect doubling rig.

I'm sold.

Phil,
Exactly my thinking, the TC 112 covers all the basses for me. I'm definitely considering some spring cleaning, to thin out the herd.

Thank you very much, gentlemen! I try to avoid coming out and "basking" too much, but the last several posts really got to me.

You see, from what I gather, the VL-208 is widely considered to be the best cab for double bass. And it has reigned as such for a long time, no doubt rightfully so - it's a very intelligent and innovative design, obviously well executed. I am honored that my cab is considered to compete in the same league, as frankly that is something I aspired to when developing the Thunderchild, and in particular the "acoustic friendly" version. Imo double-bass is more of a challenge than electric bass because the unamplified instrument itself sets the bar very high, and it's right there for you to compare with.

I still have to do some gig testing to know for sure. But it's the best contender yet for me moving on from the VL208; but I'll know better after a half dozen gigs with one.

Things always sound different in the soup than they do in the lab.

Subscribed. Starting to sound interesting. Bob, I don't know you or your playing, but that's a strong statement! Phil, you're another thumper like old DURRL, so let me know how it goes, with whole signal chain if possible. Can you B-slap a frisky drummer with it with room to spare? I'm covered for 95% of my gigs, but the other 5% need this aspect.

Dunno yet. Gotta get one that doesn't belong to someone else so I can blow it up like I blow up everything else. A couple months I'll let you know.

Ok maybe a little hyperbole, but that's just because I'm so excited using it. As much as I like the EA VL 208, there was never any question that I was listening to an amplified bass through a speaker system--a very good, natural sounding system but a system nonetheless. With the Thunderchild and the Ehrlund pickup, I'm getting MUCH LESS sense of being electronically amplified/reproduced and much more sense of my bass simply being louder.

Any time I swapped out equipment in the past, maybe one or 2 people even noticed. Seems like everyone is commenting on how good THIS system sounds.

I hope that's a little more helpful and I'll try to curb my enthusiasm down a couple notches.

My 115 is essentially the same thing as the 112, scaled up a bit. Because the 115 ends up being a more demanding application as far as the compression driver goes, I'm using a considerably more expensive compression driver, so we don't lose anything in the sound quality department. Of course, the 115 hits not only your frisky drummer but also your wallet a bit harder.

IME/IMHO, no. Especially since you do have a volume knob. :smug:

Hah! I would say yes and no...I have run 600 watts at 4ohms into my TC115AF and my Blast Cult upright...I was able to get that cab WAY louder than I thought I could. I've yet to blow a 3015 myself, but I understand they sound pretty good until the bad stuff happens, so as always, use common sense :)
