You're absolutely right. I should apologise to the forum for my joke about Melbourne's weather. Clearly, the use of the "haha" in the text and the smilie at the end was not enough to designate the post as a joke and people around the world could mistakenly think that I was seriously saying the Melbourne never has good weather. It was terrible of me to write something on the internet that would slander the fine city of Melbourne is such a harsh and misleading way.

I am sorry, mlowe. I don't know what came over me and I am sure that you would never, joking or otherwise, post something in this thread or any other which was slanderous or potentially misleading to any place in the world. ... once again...I am sorry - apologise to you and the forum. I hope we can get over this misunderstanding. :)

I always thought of Canberra as a place kind of like the original planners of Washington DC envisioned the US capitol should be..

a place to send politicians to keep them out of you hair, unfortunately they keep escaping and coming back... and bringing their stupid ideas with them...:eyebrow:

in-spite of OZ's faults they did give the world Foster's, footy and the BeeGees... well, two out three ain't bad.

Wait - a 'recent study' that is already 3.5 years old? The article is dated June 2004.

I'd be happy to move to nuclear power, however the average Australian goes into palpitations when being confronted with having a nuclear reactor anywhere near them, or waste stored on land that currently is of no use to anyone.

I was joining in on the Aussie tradition of saying Melbourne has crappy weather. I agree and disagree with this. Melbourne always looks very sunny and fine when it's shown on the news, but for the two weeks I spent in Melbourne when I was a lot younger, it was dismal and wet non-stop. If mlowe says it's quite often sunny, then I will take his word for it, seeing as he lives there and all and I've only been for two weeks.

Bagging Melbourne's weather (in a light hearted way) is just as Australian as bagging New Zealand. :p I wasn't necessarily saying you were wrong there because I knew you were just joking. But I generally disagree with everything else you have to say about Australia, no offence to you.

If you want crappy weather, go to Stoke on Trent in England or Rotorua in New Zealand... Two of the most dismal places I have been in my whole life!!!

None taken, I am quite confident on my views on life in Australia, having lived there for longer that you have been alive and having lived in Brisbane, Perth, Melbourne and Sydney, I'd say I have a pretty broad experience of living there. Whether you agree or not with my views makes no difference to me.

I haven't been to Australia in my life, but I can find it on a map and draw a pretty good semblance of it on a sheet of paper. Based on this, I think Mark is right both in his assessment of the country and it's varied climates and in a broader moral sense.

I could, however it probably won't change people's minds, and - in any case - Mark seems to prefer it in London where - from reports from friends who visit and work there - it is dull, dreary, over-populated and very expensive to live... :D

No argument there. North is hotter than south. What the guys are talking about is the comments often made about Melbournes weather changing quickly. Four seasons in one day style. Sure that happens at times but to say it's always like that isn't true.

For example, this week has been warm to hot almost every day and blue skies. Only today (sun) it's semi cloudy/sunny but still warm. Personally I enjoy the weather here. It's not hot every single day and cold neither.

Go to sydney or brisbane and the weather is warmer and more consistent. Just like any other country that is effected by distance to equator.

Back to the thread topic. o2, we are probably guilty. Is Australia a filthy dirty place? I totally disagree. Like most on here I've traveled too and while I can name cleaner places it is still at least in the top few.

I travel to Adelaide very often just as I do Sydney and Brisbane. Adelaide I have never seen with a polluted sky and the city was super clean every time I've been there. Sure there will be exceptions but in general it's what I see consistently.
