Avant-Garde Bassists?

The guy from Lightning Bolt

brian gibson....and YES. this is a really good one cause it seems like everyone kinda has their own idea of what avant-garde really is; and i've seen some interesting suggestions and definitions.. which i can say i wouldn't have expected nor would i really consider. to me it pretty much is another term for experimental, futuristic(in some light)and out of the ordinary.

When I think of avant-garde I think of Brian Gibson and Lightning Bolt.

Their live show is super intense.

The late Mick Karn, creator of many inscrutable fretless lines, started off somewhat influenced by Percy Jones, but quickly found a very unique voice. Came to prominence in the left-of-center UK new wave/art rock band Japan in the late '70s:

Maybe not all that out there harmonically, but still a unique approach.

Can't believe nobody has mentioned Ingebrigkt Haker Flaten or John Edwards.

That's the brit John Edwards who plays sometimes with Evan Parker and John Russell, not the JE in Status Quo..

Ingebrit's work is all over the place..I like him a lot in The Thing.

Bill Laswell for sure, but he covers a lot of ground musically, I guess just like Bill Frisell.

Last Exit (the avantgarde/free jazz band not the fusion band) probably displaying some of his most far out work, some of his early work with the experimental rock band Massacre, with Fred Frith on guitar, features some of my favorite tracks with Laswell as well.

Trevor Dunn too, both in his own trio, where he mainly plays upright though, in his work with John Zorn, but I would also claim it's the case in Mr. Bungle.

His own trio Trevor Dunn's Trio-Convulsant and John Zorn's Moonchild I'd say would be a good place to start.

Both Bill Laswell and Trevor Dunn are on my personal top 10 favorite bass players of all time.
