Ok, so the only way I can squeeze out the funds for a 153 is to sell my beloved 1215L. Although the 1215 has done a yeoman's job for me over the past 2 years since I bought it new from Johnno, I am gassing for something different. So here's my A-B:

Weight
1215 - 40lbs 153 - 63lbs - Schroeder has a huge + here.
Wattage
1215 - 800 153 - 600? - Schroeder?
Low end - the 3015 is a low end monster
Mids - TBD - but the Schroe is known for the punch.

Price/Value

The 1215L new is about $900 including shipping. The 153 will come in at about $450 including shipping. So selling the 1215 will end up being more or less a wash, maybe a bit on the + side.

Any thoughts from my TB brethren?

I always found the Schroeder stuff to be "fairly voiced."
Some folks like that, some don't.

I'd expect the avatar to be much more even, and hifi and fatter, yet controlled...

speculation, as i've not played one, but i've played LDs variants of it.

hold out for the upcoming audiokinesis 212 cab? ;)

disclaimer: duke is a pal and i beta tested it. won't be $450 shipped, but it definitely steps up the high end woofer/mid bass cab game.

These cabs will be apple and orange. The Schro is a mid-machine. Nothing is easier to hear in a live situation in my little experience (don't play many gigs but had 15+ and old/baffled 1212L) but the lows are simply not very present at all in Jorg's cabs, at least the older ones-not sure about the BMFs. The 15/6/3 is a lock to be vastly greater down low as well as more balanced. If you are tickled with the Schro, be aware this will be a completely different, and much heavier kettle of fish. Your call.

i'll add that to me these types of cabs sound like a good studio monitor or a pa cab optimized for bass. plus they have excellent dispersion characteristics to where you sound the same over a wider area of coverage.

but they're not for everyone. a lot of folks still prefer the voicing of more "normal" bass cab designs like 410's and 115's and stuff. these types of cabs will definitely pack a wallop in a smaller package, but imho you do have to dig that studio clarity. which i do, but i also own and appreciate a good 810 that'll rip your face off ;)

Good take Jimmy (pretty much as always). My Avatar TB 153 can be exactly as Jimmy stated, providing incredible clarity across the frequency spectrum. Or, turn the tweeter off completely, and cut some treble and/or high mids and you can get a much more 'vintage' 'lo fi' sound. This cab set flat with the tweet on is sure to refine your technique as it has the capability to picup even the most subtle harmonics, etc. I can get any tone I want out of this cab! For $448 shipped brand new, good luck finding a better cab!

Finally! Got my amp situation sorted out. My TB153 was patiently waiting for some juice for too long. I had acquired a Markbass CL300 used ($650) and had nothing but trouble from it. Probably why it was $650. Today I returned it for an Ampeg SVT-7 Pro, brought it home and plugged in. Wow. Just wow. The cab sounds amazing! Amp set flat, its very articulate, big lows without being muddy, and very crisp highs with the tweeter up. I prefer a bit less of the clickety clack so I dialed the tweeter down about half way. Plenty of highs, but not as piercing. The mids are near perfect with the amp set flat as well. Some very minor tweaking to taste. The amp has 1000 watts into 4 ohms so I was able to dial in a lot of extra low end without losing any power. Bumped the bass @ 40hz a couple db and the walls were shaking. Notes still distinct though. This thing is REALLY loud. I tested it with a Mike Lull M4V and Valenti 4 string fretless jazz. Both with fralins. Fender V is at the studio so haven't run a low B yet, but I don't have any worries. I play mostly fingerstyle funk. Staccato, dead notes, etc. and it was quick and punchy. I think the bottom line is this cab is capable. It handles plenty of power, is super loud, big fat lows, and the capacity for more highs than I care for in my sound. Easily dialed out of course. I know my money was well spent.

Yep.

Two 210AV's, stacked vertical, is a beautiful thing....nooooo-where near as deep as the Avatar sounds though, I'd bet.

Pretty different things, but, two nice things.
